Palm Beach County, FL.– We’re officially at the halfway point of the 2026 high school football season, and while the offensive stars tend to grab most of the headlines, there’s been no shortage of dudes making their presence felt on the defensive side of the ball.
From dominant interior play to ball-hawking defensive backs and linebackers flying around the field, these are some of the guys who have been the heartbeat of their respective defenses through the first five weeks. This isn’t necessarily a ranking, but rather a look at the players who’ve separated themselves with their production, consistency and overall impact on the game.
Jamar Thompson, IDL — West Boca Raton
The consensus No. 1 player in Palm Beach County is just as good as advertised. The 6-foot-4 Georgia Tech commit has dominated the trenches through the opening stretch of the season, battling through double and triple teams while fortifying the interior of the Bulls’ defensive front.
Thompson has tallied 20 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, a pass deflection and 10 QB hurries.
West Boca’s defensive core has put together one of the most impressive starts in the area, allowing less than five points per game against some of the top offenses in the country. The gigantic “Big-40” has imposed his will up front, clogging rushing lanes and making quarterbacks’ lives miserable in the process.
Ty Kirkpatrick, EDGE — Cardinal Newman
Cardinal Newman’s Ty Kirkpatrick has been a two-way force to be reckoned with to open his junior season. At 6-foot-4, 235 pounds, Kirkpatrick has the size, speed and motor to show exactly why he’s the owner of 20 Division I offers.
Ty has racked up 27 tackles, 12 tackles for loss, four sacks and 17 backfield pressures through the opening portion of the season. He’s been a consistent presence in the backfield and one of the biggest difference-makers on the Cardinal Newman defense.
Jayvon Dawson, EDGE — Santaluces
Santaluces EDGE Jayvon Dawson may be the biggest stock riser in the state. Dawson’s turned heads as a high-upside recruit who explodes off the film with some of the most God-gifted athleticism I’ve seen at the high school level.
The 6-foot-5 Miami commit is a true Jack-backer, showcasing the positional versatility to line up all over the front and create problems in a variety of ways. Dawson has led the Chiefs’ defense with 20 tackles, seven tackles for loss, two sacks, nine QB hurries and a forced fumble.
Sylar Storey, LB — Boca Raton
2028 LB Sylar Storey has been one of the bright spots on Boca Raton’s defense. The 5-foot-10 MIKE has taken a big leap to open his junior campaign, recording 32 tackles (19 solo), four tackles for loss, a sack, a forced fumble and a blocked field goal.
After a 75-tackle sophomore campaign, Sylar is on pace to surpass his previous season’s total while cementing himself as the top-rated non-senior linebacker in the area.
Turmarian Moreland Jr., DB — Palm Beach Lakes
The Virginia Tech-committed Turmarian Moreland Jr. has been a hawk over the top for the Palm Beach Lakes Rams. The 6-foot-1 defensive back has shined at both safety and nickel, with his positional versatility allowing him to become a Swiss Army knife for the Rams’ defense.
“Lil TMo” currently has 15 tackles, a forced fumble, a touchdown, four pass breakups and an interception.
Whether he’s playing downhill in the box or covering over the top, Moreland has shown the versatility to impact the game from multiple spots.
Tyler Alexander, IDL — Palm Beach Central
The Palm Beach Central Broncos have opened the 2026 regular season with a red-hot 4-0 start, and much of that success is due to the dominance of Tyler Alexander.
Alexander has lived in the backfield all fall, recording 17 total tackles, 14 tackles for loss, four sacks, a pick-six and a blocked field goal on special teams.
The Texas commit has certainly done his part to help the Broncos get off to their hot start, and his ability to create havoc behind the line of scrimmage has been a major part of PBC’s early success.
Max Reid, LB — West Boca Raton
If you’re looking for elite linebacker play, look no further than West Boca senior Maxwell Reid. As previously stated, the Bulls’ defense has locked down some of the highest-octane offenses in the country, and Reid has played a major part in that.
Through five games, Max has tallied 24 total tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and two interceptions, including the game-sealing pick against American Heritage Plantation.
Reid is your prototypical MIKE linebacker, with his hat always in the action and no fear of doing the dirty work. Over the last two years, he’s recorded more than 90 tackles as the Bulls have found their way to championship soil.
That’s just a look at some of the defensive players who’ve made their presence felt through the first half of the season. There’s still a lot of football left, and with the biggest games of the year still ahead, there’s plenty of time for someone to crash this conversation.
For now, though, these are the guys making life miserable for opposing offenses across the 561.
