Miami Hurricanes Shock Top-10 Notre Dame, Extend Home Winning Streak to 18

MIAMI GARDENS , FL – The University of Miami Hurricanes opened the 2025 season with a statement win over a top-10 opponent, defeating the Notre Dame Fighting Irish 27-24 in a thrilling contest that showcased Miami’s offensive firepower and defensive discipline.

Miami struck early in the first quarter, as quarterback Carson Beck led an 8-play, 70-yard drive capped off by a 28-yard touchdown pass to true freshman Malachi Toney, giving the Hurricanes a 7-0 lead. Notre Dame answered quickly on an 11-play, 68-yard drive, with CJ Carr finding Micah Gilbert for a 7-yard touchdown, tying the game 7-7.

With just seconds left in the first half, Beck connected with LSU transfer CJ Daniels on a spectacular 20-yard one-handed grab, giving Miami a 14-7 lead at the break. Beck finished the night 20-of-30 for 205 yards with two touchdowns, showing poise and accuracy throughout.

Miami extended its lead in the third quarter on a CharMar Brown 5-yard touchdown run, a 12-play, 75-yard drive that ate up 7:37 of clock. Even more notable was the presence of music mogul Rick Ross, who reportedly approved of the Hurricanes’ performance from the sidelines.

The Canes’ defense, under new defensive coordinator Corey Hetherman, a recent hire from Minnesota, played lights out. Miami forced a key turnover in the fourth quarter when DE Rueben Bain Jr. intercepted CJ Carr, returning it 17 yards and setting up Carter Davis’ 38-yard field goal, extending the lead to 24-14. Miami held Heisman hopeful running back Jeremiyah Love to just 33 yards on 10 carries, neutralizing Notre Dame’s ground attack.

Notre Dame refused to go quietly, responding with field goals and a late TD by Carr to Jordan Faison, tying the game 24-24. But Miami’s Carter Davis drilled a 47-yard field goal with 1:04 remaining, reclaiming the lead and setting up a dramatic finish. On the final play, CJ Carr was sacked by Akheem Mesidor and Rueben Bain Jr. for a 6-yard loss as time expired, sealing the victory.

The win marks Miami’s 18th straight home win and keeps the Hurricanes’ opening game winning streak alive at 18, continuing a remarkable run at Hard Rock Stadium. The victory also represents Miami’s first win against a top-10 opponent since 2017, signaling a bold start for a team hungry to make a statement in 2025.

Miami now looks to carry this momentum into their next matchup, with fans and alumni energized by a team that blends a high-powered offense, a dominant defensive front, and the approval of fans and celebrities alike.
