FORT PIERCE – They were the Treasure Coast’s last team standing.
They were the area’s only team that reached the FHSAA state semifinal round this past season.
They finished the season at 10-2.
And they finished as our No. 1 ranked team in the Treasure Coast.
They are the John Carroll Golden Rams, our first Team of the Year for the area.

Head coach/athletic Mickey Groody spoke on this most prestigious honor.
“It feels great,” Groody said. “Not only for my players, but for my staff, school faculty, our parents, and the John Carroll community in general. The support from all sorts of John Carroll stakeholders has been amazing. But especially happy for my coaches and players because no one sees how hard the work is done behind the scenes. So to see the hard work pay off for all of them is amazing.”
John Carroll won the District 6-1S title in a Week 8 victory (26-3) over Cardinal Mooney. It also won two FHSAA playoff games at home (38-7 over Cardinal Mooney – 1S-Region 3 semifinal; 14-7 over Lakeland Christian – 1S-Region 3 final).
Golden Rams senior defensive lineman Josh Meltzer (Co-Lineman of the Year) spoke on how this past season went for John Carroll, which reached its first state semifinal since 2003.

“It feels good to know that we had the ability to make it to states and know that we can compete with other teams in the Treasure Coast,” Meltzer said.
Golden Rams senior quarterback Dawson Maehl finished the season with 1,653 passing yards, 15 touchdowns, and nine interceptions in 11 games played. He provided his commentary on how it all turned out for the Treasure Coast’s best team.
“It’s an honor to be a part of a team that planned for this from the end of last season and did everything we had to do to get here,” Maehl said of John Carroll’s run to the state semifinal round and up to Treasure Coast supremacy.

“My coaches and teammates never waivered, never took our eyes off our goal, never stopped supporting each other,” Maehl continued. “It’s been an amazing journey.”
Golden Rams defensive line coach Joe Molina summed it all up for our Team of the Year.
“It’s a great honor to be selected for that,” Molina said. “It’s a credit to what the kids put on the field. The kids did a great job of taking what we were trying to give them and executing it to the best of their abilities. We’re really excited about it and we’re thankful.”
