BOCA RATON – In case one hasn’t noticed by now, the St. Andrew’s Scots have a multifaceted offense.
The upstart high school football program, which made its first FHSAA playoff appearance in 45 years, is currently led by head coach Jimmy Robertson and junior quarterback Jeremiah Young. It also has a reliable junior running back in Jovan Joseph, who may be one of the most underrated players in Palm Beach County.
Ranked as our No. 5 running back in Palm Beach County, Joseph finished his junior season with 558 rushing yards and 3 touchdowns. His best game this past year was in Week 8’s 29-20 road win over Ransom Everglades, when he led the team with 18 carries for 119 yards and 2 touchdowns.
Joseph had a lot to say about this particular game, which was played in Miami.
“The Ransom game was down near where I live,” said Joseph, who currently lives in North Miami. “I had the chance to play against some of my middle school friends and had some other friends come watch me play, so I had to give all my effort. It was just a great atmosphere to be a part of.”
Joseph delved a little bit into the difference between being in his home city of Miami and being at St. Andrew’s in Boca Raton.
“Well I board, so I’m usually at school throughout the year,” Joseph said. “But the lifestyles are different and the people are different. Every time I come down to see my mom and family, it’s just a reminder to me that I can use my brain to provide a lot of blessings for them. SA (St. Andrew’s) provides the education and allows me to network with students who are smarter than me and are also driven by success.”
Joseph, who currently has a 3.89 grade point average, reflected on his junior year at St. Andrew’s.
“I think it went well,” the 5-foot-10, 188-pound running back said. “I feel as if I was able to develop as a leader for the team. I’m happy to be getting stronger, faster, and more versatile. I hope that in my senior year, I continue to never come off the field.”
Young spoke about Joseph’s overall impact on the team.
“He’s a very intelligent guy,” Young said. “He’s willing to step up and do whatever he needs to do to help us succeed.”
At this time, Joseph has no offers. But he has received interest from Columbia, Hobart, Middlebury, Holy Cross, Bowdoin, and Chicago.
“Coach Rob (Robertson) is talking to these schools as well,” Joseph said. “He’s trying to see if we can keep moving forward in the recruiting process.”
Robertson spoke of Joseph as a player and as a person.
“Jovan’s a great overall young man,” Robertson said. “He’s a very high academic and great leader great person in the community at Saint Andrews. He is a true Scot. He is going to make one college very happy they got him.”
SIDE NOTE: Due to the current coronavirus pandemic, Joseph has had to alter his workout regimen. He went into what he’s doing to keep himself in top shape.
“I’ve just been running and doing workouts sent by Coach Rob,” Joseph said. “Unfortunately, my trainer down here has closed the gym, so I have to keep it basic and simple.”
We’re going to follow up closely with Joseph between now and the day he signs with a college next year.
