EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ. – Tomorrow, New Era Prep will be in attendance for the New York Giants Training Camp. Before we hit the field tomorrow morning, here are some questions that we have that will be looking to be answered at tomorrow’s session.
Saquon Barkley, For Better or Worse?
One of the biggest storylines of the off-season was Saquon Barkley deciding to leave the Giants and head to divisional rival Philadelphia Eagles in the Free Agent period. In response the Giants went out and signed Devin Singletary from the Houston Texans.
It seems that Singletary is the obvious favorite to be the starter heading into week one, but the Giants do have some depth in the running back room, including Eric Gray who will be entering his second season and saw some decent playing time in his rookie campaign behind Barkley last season. It will be interesting to see who stands out for the rest of camp.
Was Malik Nabers the final piece to completing a young receiver core?
The Giants receiving core was one of the weak points for the team, mainly relying on Isaiah Hodgins and Darius Slayton. Those two will be competing for the coveted WR 1 spot on the roster but the real question is what happens to the rest of the core. Passing up on a quarterback in this years draft to take LSU stud receiver Malik Nabers gathered an interesting reaction from Giants fans, but was this the missing piece to the offense? Nabers rounds out a young and upcoming core which consists of Jalin Hyatt, Wan’Dale Robinson, and Bryce Ford-Wheaton. Nabers has been making headlines at training camp so far by competing with Deontae Banks in the 11 on 11 drills, making a fun but also interesting matchup between the offense and defensive players. With the addition of Allen Robinson II to give the locker room some veteran presence, the Giants have quietly been fixing a glaring issue from last season and will definitely be a select group of players to watch at camp and the preseason.
A defense to be afraid of?
The Giants already had an impressive and young defense last season that showed some specks of talent and hope for the future in the midst of a dark season. A defense that already contained Kayvon Thibodeaux, Dexter Lawrence, Azeez Ojulari, Bobby Okereke, and Deontae Banks, now adds Brain Burns from the Carolina Panthers. Burns already made his presence known by immediately taking on and beating Andrew Thomas in scrimmage play, making things a whole lot more interesting.
Two fan favorites in the QB 2 slot, who gets the nod?
Tommy DeVito took the NFL by storm last year, from being virtually unknown at last year’s training camp and spending most of the season on the practice squad, to going 3-1 as a starter and one of those wins being an upset victory over a very good Packers team. DeVito did a lot to prove that he can be an NFL QB, but was it enough to keep his spot on the Giants? DeVito himself certainly thinks so.
On the other hand, the Giants went out and grabbed Drew Lock from the Seahawks during free agency. This was a move that not many were expecting, especially since many thought DeVito did enough to be the backup heading into this season with Tyrod Taylor leaving. However, the Giants decided to take an insurance policy and bring Lock in. So far, it seems to be a good investment as Lock has been putting the work in training camp so far.
With both quarterbacks looking to prove the absolute most for that coveted backup spot this will definitely be an interesting duel to see as training camp and the preseason progress.
