John I. Leonard dominates second half vs Suncoast to Stay Undefeated

John I. Leonard entered its matchup against Suncoast with a perfect 4-0 record, riding a hot streak and putting together one of the program’s best seasons in recent history. After an 18-0 victory over the Chargers, the Lancers improved to 5-0 on the season.

Suncoast came ready to play defensively, forcing two turnovers in the opening quarter. The Chargers recovered a fumble before sophomore athlete Corde Davis came away with an interception to end the first quarter.

The defensive battle continued throughout the first half, with both teams trading stops and forcing three-and-outs. John I. Leonard put together a promising drive late in the second quarter, but a field goal attempt was unsuccessful, sending the game into halftime tied 0-0.

John I. Leonard’s defense quickly made its presence felt coming out of halftime. On Suncoast’s opening drive of the second half, Mathew Alvarez recovered a fumble, giving the Lancers an opportunity to finally break through.

Quarterback Caevian Miller connected with Xzavier Montelus for a touchdown with 9:30 remaining in the third quarter, putting John I. Leonard ahead 6-0.

The Lancers’ defense struck again when Dwayne Taylor intercepted the Suncoast quarterback, adding another takeaway.

John I. Leonard extended its lead early in the fourth quarter. With 11 minutes remaining, Miller called his own number and found the end zone on a quarterback sneak, making it 12-0.

Suncoast continued to fight, and midway through the fourth quarter, Matthew Richardson intercepted Miller as the Chargers looked to create a momentum shift. The Lancers’ defense responded by keeping Suncoast off the scoreboard.

With just one minute remaining, Miller connected with Montelus once again for a touchdown, putting the finishing touches on an 18-0 victory.

The win moves John I. Leonard to 5-0 and continues one of the program’s strongest starts in recent history. The Lancers will return home Friday to take on Marco Island Academy as they look to keep their undefeated run going.
