CORAL GABLES, Fla. — After opening the season with a loss, No. 14 Miami returned to the Watsco Center looking for a different result. The Hurricanes delivered Friday night, defeating Wagner 83-57 behind a strong second-half performance.
Wagner kept things competitive early, but Miami began finding opportunities in transition and around the basket. The Hurricanes gradually created separation, taking a 34-21 advantage into halftime.
Shelton Henderson was a key part of Miami’s success, finishing with a game-high 19 points while adding five assists and three steals. His contributions on both ends of the court helped the Hurricanes maintain control throughout the night.
Miami’s offense picked up considerably in the second half. The Hurricanes found success attacking inside and shot nearly 68% from the field over the final 20 minutes, leaving Wagner with few opportunities to cut into the deficit.
The Hurricanes also received contributions from Malik Reneau, who finished with 12 points, and Caleb Gaskins, who added 11 points and six rebounds. Dante Allen provided additional support off the bench with eight points, six rebounds and five assists.
Miami’s advantage near the basket proved difficult for Wagner to overcome. The Hurricanes scored 52 points in the paint while their defense limited the Seahawks to just 33.3% shooting.
The win moves Miami to 1-1 on the season and gives the Hurricanes something to build on following their opening defeat. Miami returns to action Monday against North Florida at the Watsco Center, with tipoff scheduled for 7 p.m.
