The ACC Football kicked off this morning of their media days with opening remarks from Commissioner Jim Philips and he dropped a new policy regarding injury reports for football, women’s/men’s basketball and baseball.
“This decision is directly connected to our ongoing commitment to best protect our student-athletes and our multi-faceted approach to addressing the effects of sports wagering,” Phillips said. “In this case, it would alleviate pressure from entities or individuals who are involved in sports wagering that attempt to obtain inside information about availability from players, coaches, and other staff. Safety has always been taken seriously by this league, and I applaud our schools for further enhancing and formalizing these important measures.
Football teams will now be required to initially report their injured players two days before the game, while providing updates 24 hours and 2 hours before kickoff. As for the Basketballs and Baseball, Coaches are required to report one day prior to tip off.
Philips also noted that he took a call with coaches and when they were informed, nothing was said. “So I don’t know what that meant, other than they were accepting it.” Philips said.
Not only does this new policy make for a fair playing field for these student athletes, but it was mentioned that it is also to protect against the rise of gambling concerns as well. The obligation of injury reporting will be on the ACC website weekly for fans to view.
