CORAL GABLES – Jose Borregales had a season for the ages at Miami.
The graduate transfer, who also played college football for FIU, made the most of his 2020 by connecting on 20 of his 22 field goals (90.9 percentage) in 11 games played. His longest field goal was for a whopping 57 yards in a 48-0 win over Duke on Dec. 5.
The Booker T. Washington (Miami) alum had an amazing 100 percent rate on his extra points, going 37-for-37 in the process. He scored 97 points by himself, which was probably the highest individual accomplishment this season for the Hurricanes.
In the Cheez-It Bowl, Borregales (5-foot-10, 205 pounds) was 2-for-2 on his field goals, including a 40-yarder in Miami’s 37-34 loss to Oklahoma State on Dec. 29. He was also 2-for-2 on his extra points, scoring eight points in the process.
As a result of this amazing season, Borregales has been selected as a First-Team All American by AFCA (American Football Coaches Association). His honor came earlier today.
Borregales has received a slew of other First-Team All-America honors, including the following:
- Football Writers Association of American (FWAA) – Dec. 30
- Associates Press – Dec. 28
Another honor that may be bestowed upon Borregales is perhaps the most prestigious one of all – the Lou Groza Award for the nation’s best kicker.
Borregales is the odds-on favorite to be this year’s Lou Groza Award winner. The Reese’s Senior Bowl invite, who has recently announced that he will declare for the 2021 NFL Draft, will find out his fate on Monday, Jan. 4.
For his four-year career at both Miami and FIU, Borregales has made 70 of his 88 field goal attempts (79.5 percent), while also going 168-for-171 on his extra points. The nation’s best kicker has amassed a total of 378 points in his illustrious college football career.
