Delray Beach, FL – Atlantic looks to make history after defeating Western 35-22.
Atlantic High School is flying high after the eagles put on a dominant performance against a scrappy Western football team in the 8A regional game.
The eagles struck fast as Senior Wide out and special teams catalyst Varrick “Oyeh” Lurry-Davis took a pitch from freshman running back Montahj Joseph on a short kick off by Western and ran 80 yards to put the eagles on the board first.
The eagles looked as if they were going to put this game away early as Defensive Back/Wide out Corey Gammage intercepted a pass from Westerns Quarterback Harrison Story and returned the ball to the 47 yard line. A few plays later Wide out Varrick “Oyeh” Lurry-Davis scored on a 47 yard pass from Senior Quarterback Antoine Williams II to push the eagles lead to 14-0 in the first quarter.
After a very slow start the Wildcats picked things up with a 15 yard touchdown pass from Quarterback Harrison Story to Running back Keshaun Clarke. The wildcats would put the clamps on Atlantics offense as defensive back Frankie Heran made a aerobatic interception that put an end to Atlantic’s promising offensive drive.
Going into halftime it seemed as if it was anybody’s game as both teams were jocking for position. Eagles lead 14-6 at the half.
The eagles defense came up big in the second half as senior defensive back Kenih Lovely would open the half with a pick six that pushed the eagles lead to 21-6 with 10 minutes left in the third quarter, his second interception of the night. Senior defensive back Christian Brown would get in on the action too as he recorded two interceptions in the second half and took one for a touchdown that put Atlantic up 28-6 with a little over two minutes left in the third quarter.
The eagles would put the nail in the coffin after junior wide out Kamareon Williams scored on a 15 yard run that went right through the middle of Westerns defense. Atlantic was up 35-6 midway through the fourth quarter.
Western was plagued by penalties and turnovers most of the night. Westerns Quarterback Harrison Story threw a total of five interceptions. The wildcats couldn’t get much going until late in the fourth quarter after Atlantic pulled most of its starters from the game with a little over five minutes left.
Western Michigan verbal commit and Atlantic Senior defensive back Kenih Lovely stated during his post game interview that “It feels good to come back and contribute to the team.” Kenih missed most of the regular season dealing with an injury. Senior defensive back Christian Brown spoke about the teams motivation to keep winning during his post game interview stating “We’re driving to put history in the books.” Christian also went on to mention the importance of brotherhood and togetherness. Brotherhood and cherishing the moment was something that was stressed earlier in the week by Atlantic football alumni that visited Atlantic’s practice Wednesday.
Atlantic (11-1) will host Miami Senior high school (12-1) Friday December 1st in the 8A semi finals to see who will play in the state championship game on December 9th.
