NEW YORK, NY. – The dreaded “Black Monday” has officially arrived in the NFL, year after year this day claims the careers of head coaches across the league, but sometimes it starts a new chapter for some of these coaches.

Five of the six teams that fired a head coach had ended the season five wins or under, meanwhile, the Falcons who had finished the year with eight wins, ultimately decided to end their project with Raheem Morris.

Here are the teams that fired their coaches and their final season record:

  • Arizona Cardinals; 3-14
  • Tennessee Titans; 3-14
  • Las Vegas Raiders; 3-14
  • New York Giants; 4-13
  • Cleveland Browns; 5-12
  • Atlanta Falcons; 8-9

Here’s the overview of each head coach that got fired, and their career record;

  • Johnathan Gannon; Went 15-36 in his three years in Arizona, team got off to a promising 2-0 start this year but ultimately couldn’t keep the momentum going.
  • Pete Carroll; Went 3-14 in his only season with the Raiders, somewhat tarnishing his incredibly prestigious coaching career, He’s gone 173-134-1 overall in his NFL career which includes a Super Bowl win. Carroll who will be 74 by the time next season kicks off, more than likely could announce his retirement from coaching within the coming weeks
  • Kevin Stefanski; Went 5-12 in his sixth season with the Browns, Stefanski’s career record is 45-56, he boasts being a two-time NFL Coach of the Year winner, out of all the firings, he is looked to be the favorite to be picked up as the head coach for a different team
  • Raheem Morris; Went 8-9 in his second season as the full time Head Coach for the Atlanta Falcons (Was the interim in 2020), This comes as a surprise firing as the Falcons only missed the playoffs by one game this season, ultimately the Falcons chose to fire him and General Manager Terry Fontenot. Morris hosts a 36-56 career record as a head coach, but does hold two Super Bowl victories as an Assistant Head Coach, Morris likely will be hired by a team to be a coordinator for a potential contending team.
  • Brian Callahan; Was fired by the Titans in Week 7 after a 1-5 start, and a 3-14 finish to last season which gave the Titans the first pick in the draft which lead to Cam Ward. Callahan is still fairly young and will likely be seek out by teams as an offensive coordinator as that’s where most of his coaching experience comes from. Callahan boasts a very subpar 4-19 record as a head coach, which might make teams steer away from him.
  • Brian Daboll; Was fired by the Giants during the Week 11 Bye Week after starting the season 2-8. Over three and a half seasons, Daboll’s record as head coach of the Giants was 20–40–1 including a playoff win. Daboll, much like Morris will be looked out for by contending teams in need of a more aggressive offensive coordinator, Daboll’s work in Buffalo as an offensive coordinator and making a very bad Giants offensive unit have bright moments will make him a favorable target.

With those Coaches having an announced vacancy, here’s the next wave of teams who could potentially have a coach opening soon;

  • Miami Dolphins –
    • Reason: Firing
      • The Dolphins once again miss the playoffs in a very underwhelming season, despite the very talent loaded roster the team couldn’t get it done again, with the team firing their General Manager Chris Grier after the team started 2-7, and Tua Tagoviola being benched at the end of the year, the Dolphins could see a new regime come in and blow the whole circuit up in a rebuild scenario which includes firing Mike McDaniel.
  • Baltimore Ravens –
    • Reason: Firing
      • The Ravens miss the playoffs in the worst way imaginable, as being a preseason favorite to make it to the Super Bowl, everything went wrong this season, and with Lamar Jackson still in the prime of his career, the Ravens are going to want to stay in “win now” mode as much as they can, even if this includes firing their historically prominent Head Coach John Harbaugh.
  • Pittsburgh Steelers –
    • Reason: Retirement, Firing, or Stepping Down
      • The Steelers year after year make the playoffs by just squeaking into the Wild Card round, this year was no different, once again just finishing above .500 the Steelers make it in, despite this Head Coach Mike Tomlin has had rumors surrounding him about retiring and going into a career in media. While this will be a massive blow to the Steelers if Tomlin chooses to retire, it will usher in a new era for the Steelers which might be needed.
      • However, should Tomlin be fired or simply step down and look for new coaching opportunities, best believe he will be incredibly sought after by teams who are looking for a quick turnaround.

Only time will tell what happens to any of these coaches, after all, the offseason has only begun for 16 of 32 NFL teams.
