BOYNTON BEACH – Archbishop McCarthy spoiled Boynton Beach’s Tigers home opener in a 21-8 win.

The game would start with action as Boynton Beach fumbled the opening kickoff and Bishop (1-2) recovered. The Tigers (0-3) would be stiff in the red zone and defensive back Trenton Robinson would pick off Bishop’s quarterback.

Both teams would trade three-and-outs the first quarter. Then Bishop quarterback Cody Hallman would find the end zone twice in the second quarter – one with 9:44 left in the second and the other on a short run with 3:13 left – to give his team a 12-0 lead.

But Boynton Beach would take the momentum into halftime. The offense put together a drive that ended on a pass from Guenson Alexis to Charles Bryant, who was doubled-covered but found a way to jump defenders and come down with it in the end zone with 58 seconds left.

A two-point conversion would cut Bishop’s lead to 12-8, and Boynton Beach would go into the second half with a chance to complete a comeback bid.

Boynton Beach defensive back Verwayne Alexander would pick off Bishop’s quarterback with three minutes left in the third quarter. But the Tigers offense couldn’t capitalize on the turnover.

Bishop would find a way to extend its lead with 9:15 left in the fourth on a high snap that went over a Boynton punter’s head. As a result, a Boynton player was tackled in the end zone for a safety to give Bishop a 14-8 lead.

The Tigers turnovers woes would continue late in the fourth quarter as they fumbled with 3:38 left in the the game.

As a result of the crucial turnover, Hallman would score his third touchdown of the night with 1:08 left to secure the Mavericks 21-8 victory.
