Earlier on Monday, it was announced that former FAU Men’s Basketball Dusty May will be leaving Michigan after two seasons to become the head coach of the NBA’s Dallas Mavericks.

Fast forward a few hours later, it was reported by Pete Thamel on Twitter/X that the man who hired May at FAU in the first place, Athletic Director and Vice President Brian White, was nearing a deal to become the Athletic Director and Vice President over at Virginia Tech. The hiring has now been made official via Virginia Tech Athletics socials:

White was hired as FAU’s fifth official VP and Athletic Director in school history back in 2018, taking over for former AD Pat Chun.

What has followed has been the most successful era of Florida Atlantic athletics, headlined by an 11-win season and conference title from Lane Kiffin and FAU Football in 2019 as well as the heralded Final Four run by the men’s basketball team in 2023. White was then given a five-year contract extension in September 2024.

Aside from team successes, Brian White accomplished great things in Boca Raton. He helped guide the university’s move from Conference USA to the American Conference in 2023, which led to a better revenue stream and more time on national television. He opened up the $72 million Schmidt Family Complex in 2020, one of FAU’s most impressive athletic facilities. White also spearheaded the ‘Hometown Team’ campaign in 2024 and added new amenities and renovations across the school’s different athletics venues throughout his tenure.

In a statement from Virginia Tech President Tim Sands, he said “Brian brings the strategic vision, operational excellence, finanical acumen and leadership presence necessary to guide a modern athletics enterprise. He understands where college athletics is headed, and he shares our belief that Virginia Tech can and should compete among the nation’s elite programs.”

After stops at IMG College, Louisiana Tech, Tulsa, Army, Missouri, and FAU, White will have his biggest opportunity yet in Blacksburg.

For Florida Atlantic and University President Adam Hasner, a national search for the school’s next AD and VP will commence right away.
