Coral Gables, FL- Breaking News: Legendary Miami Men’s Basketball Coach, Jim Larrañaga intends to STEP DOWN as the Head Coach of the Miami Hurricanes less than two years after the 2023 Final 4 run, multiple sources confirm.

Coach Larrañaga (75), is the winningest Coach in program history, standing with a 274-174 record over a 14 year stint. Under Coach Larrañaga, Miami has been a perennial Tournament team, earning 6 NCAA Tournament bids, including 4 Sweet 16’s, 2 Elite 8’s and 1 Final 4 (2023). Across his lengthy 40 year coaching career, the accolades have poured in for Coach Larrañega including, Associated Press (AP), Naismith, USBWA and Henry Iba National Coach of the Year alongside 2 ACC Coach of the Year awards.

Things haven’t been easy for Coach L and the ‘Canes since the ’23 run, as Miami finished the 2023-24 season with a 10 game losing streak. Miami rebuilt their roster in the off-season, bringing in ten new faces to Coral Gables. Unfortunately for Miami, the same result has played out during the Hurricanes’ non-conference schedule, as they currently stand at 4-8 following a questionable overtime loss to Mount St Mary’s before the holidays. Miami has been on the wrong side of history during this stint, losing 18 of their last 22 outings.

Miami is expected to name Assistant Coach Bill Courtney as the interim HC for the remainder of the 2024-25 season. Courtney is in year 4 at the U, but has had plenty of experience in the Larrañaga system, working as one of his assistants from 1996-2005 at Bowling Green and George Mason. Coach Courtney is one of the leaders inside the ‘Canes recruiting department, and should have no problems taking the reins from Coach Larrañaga for the remainder of the season.
