WEST PALM BEACH – Cardinal Newman just keeps getting better.

This morning (June 19), dual-sport athlete Jermaine Council (’24) announced his transfer from The King’s Academy to Cardinal Newman via his Instagram and Twitter accounts.

The 6-foot-2 athlete has received two offers from Keiser University and St. Thomas University (FL), as well as interest from Florida Atlantic, Illinois, USF, Holy Cross, Bethune Cookman, Bryant, and Western Carolina.

When asked about his decision to transfer to Newman, Council stated:

“After long discussions with my family, we choose Newman because they know how to develop and make their athletes better,” Council said. “Their legacy and culture of excellence speaks for itself.”

Council made sure to also show his appreciation for his time at The King’s Academy.

“I’m forever grateful for the opportunities that TKA gave me,” Council said. “The past two years there’s been nothing but love shown to me and my family. I love my former teammates. Each of them is like a brother to me. Our relationships go deeper than sports. I wish them nothing but the best because it is all love.”

During his two years at King’s, Council recorded 1036 career points in basketball. Jermaine helped lead the Lions to a 27-2 record during the 2022-23 season, TKA basketball’s first district championship in school history, as well as a trip to the FHSAA Class 3A Region 2 Finals (Windermere Prep 84-68).

In 2022, Council averaged:

17.5 Points Per Game

3.5 Assists Per Game

2.5 Rebounds Per Game

2 Steals Per Game

After his dominant 2022-23 season, Jermaine Council was named “561 Private School Player of the Year” by our New Era Prep team. Also, at the end of both of his seasons at TKA, Council was named First-Team All-County by the Palm Beach Post and the South Florida Sun-Sentinel.

Council is an elite all-around hooper that is able to dominate and take control of a game. He is an elite scorer inside the paint, as well as from the three-point line. He is consistently the most athletic player on the court.

I have seen Council use his elite athleticism to make some explosive plays that 99 percent of Palm Beach County wishes they could do.

Another elite trait that Council possesses is his collectiveness under pressure. In the biggest moments, under the brightest lights, Jermaine rises to the occasion and hits the clutch shot.

In 2022, Council decided to also play for the Lions’ football team for fun. This move seemed to be beneficial for both Council and TKA, as he helped lead the Lions to their first district championship since 2005.

During his junior season, Council made his presence known on both offense and defense, recording:

•300+ rushing yards
•500+ receiving yards
•5 receiving touchdowns
•17 pass breakups
•6 interceptions
•2 interceptions returned for touchdowns

Despite being newer to the sport, Council proved to everyone that he could be an elite football player.

Offensively, Council is a Swiss-Army knife that can do anything. You can line him up on the outside, in the slot or run a Wildcat formation with him at QB. Whenever Jermaine has the ball in his hands, he becomes a problem for the opposing defense. His biggest strength is using his athleticism to catch contested jump balls, which he does regularly.

Defensively, Council was able to lock down some of the best receivers in Palm Beach County on a weekly basis.

Jermaine Council is one of the most elite raw talents in Palm Beach County. I am very excited to see how well he will fit in with Cardinal Newman’s already loaded roster.
