WELLINGTON – Meet Johan Henry.
He is Wellington’s emerging senior athlete who had a game to remember in Week 3’s 26-13 win over Santaluces.
The 5-foot-11, 195-pound standout recorded two catches for 60 yards for the Wolverines. He added six tackles, two tackles for loss, and an interception that was returned 20 yards.
Henry’s interception occurred in the third quarter, when the Wolverines (1-2) had a 19-13 lead over the Chiefs (1-2).
“The pick happened on the fourth play of the third quarter, so probably a minute or two into the quarter,” Henry said. “As I saw the quarterback drop into pass, I dropped back and was able to step in front of the receiver and get the ball to pick it off. It’s something that [Wellington defensive coordinator] Coach [Jared] Prinzo has us work on a lot so that we’ll be ready for it in game situations.”
Henry has two interceptions in three games played this season. The other one was in Week 2 against Pahokee.
On offense, our Breakthrough Player of Week 3 made a crucial catch that moved the ball for Wellington, which would go on to score a few plays later. At the time of Henry’s key reception, the game was tied at 13-13 with about five minutes left in the first half.
“My reception was able to get us down the field and have our team score a few plays later,” Henry said.
Wellington sophomore quarterback Ryan Anthony connected with Henry on the reception. Later on that drive, Anthony found Reece Larson on a 20-yard wheel route for the 19-13 lead that held at halftime.
“He’s a great player and even better leader for our team,” Henry said of Anthony. “He’s always calm and collected while playing, which I think helps us a lot in tough situations during the game. His IQ for the game is really high and I’m proud to play next to him every Friday.”
Anthony commented on Henry’s performance from this past Friday night.
“He was everywhere on defense,” Anthony said. “He made a lot of great plays and he made some great catches on offense. He got over the top of two defenders and made a great catch on first and long after a penalty. I. know I can always throw to him because he’s a very reliable receiver.”
Prinzo chimed in.
“He’s really breaking out this year,” Prinzo said about Henry. “Big competitor. Always motivating the others guys to finish. He’s a natural leader.”
Next game for Wellington: Unknown right now
NOTE: Palm Beach Central (0-1) decided to cancel its regular season finale against Wellington, which was schedule for Friday, Nov. 20 at 6 p.m. This happened due to several positive COVID-19 cases reportedly being confirmed at Palm Beach Central High School, some being students and others being employees of the school.
