PALM BEACH GARDENS – In only his second high school football game, Tyler Aronson played above his freshman status in more ways than one.
It is hard to recall a time when any quarterback in our area had a 90.9 percent completion rate or higher. Aronson did just that last week, as he had 10 successful pass connections in just 11 attempts during the first half of Benjamin’s 49-0 home win over Archbishop McCarthy.
The 6-foot-2, 200-pound signal caller finished the game with 194 passing yards and two touchdowns. He did not throw an interception and he did not get sacked at any point in the first half.
It was enough for the freshman to easily win our Breakthrough Player of Week 4 honor.
“It feels really good, especially with all the work I’ve put in the weight room and with my wide receivers,” Aronson said. “Coming back from a loss and redeeming myself, it felt great…But without my defense, lineman, wide receivers and running backs, none of this would be possible. And Coach [Eric] Kresser making me better every day.”
Aronson’s first touchdown pass was to sophomore wide receiver Micah Mays Jr., who scored on a 29-yarder in the first quarter. He spoke on how it happened.
“It felt real because of all the work we’ve put in to build our chemistry,” Aronson said of Mays Jr., who went airborne as he hauled in his touchdown catch over an Archbishop McCarthy defender in the end zone.
“It is starting to pay off,” Aronson continued. “He ran a slant and I threw it to him. He did the rest.”
Aronson’s second touchdown pass was to sophomore Darrell Sweeting. It came during the second quarter, when Sweeting caught a 57-yarder en route to the end zone on a swing pass from Aronson.
The scoring connection between Aronson and Sweeting occurred around the 4:00 mark of the second quarter, which gave Benjamin a 35-0 lead and led to a running clock from there.
“The defense was in a good position for me to throw the bubble screen,” Aronson said. “I threw it to Darrell and he made a great play.”
Benjamin freshman running back and MVP of Week 4 nominee Chauncey Bowens, who recorded 10 carries for 125 yards and three touchdowns in the first half, offered his take on how Aronson did against Archbishop McCarthy.
“Tyler played great,” said Bowens, who has 26 carries for 267 yards and three scores in his first two high school football games. “He came out and executed by playing behind our great o-line. He showed the potential of a special quarterback.”
While Aronson had an outstanding game last week, he knows he must move on to this week’s upcoming home game (Friday, Oct. 9; 7 p.m. kickoff) against Calvary Christian Academy.
“I just have to keep learning and improving,” Aronson said. “I have to trust in my teammates and coaches. I have to be confident.”
