EAST RUTHERFORD, NJ – After a disappointing end to the season at the hands of the Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC Divisional round last year the Giants are officially back as training camp officially went underway today.

Quarterback Daniel Jones and Running Back Matt Breida

The Giants had a very productive off-season resigning Quarterback Daniel Jones to a Four year deal. Bringing back one piece of the Giants dynamic offensive duo. Later in the off-season the team made a blockbuster trade with the Las Vegas Raiders which sent over Pro Bowl Tight End Darren Waller, Waller who has been set back by injuries the past season is looking to getting a fresh restart in his new home. In the draft the Giants sprung for a cornerback in the first round, taking Deonte Banks from Maryland.

Heading into training camp today the big story surrounding the team was Pro Bowl Running Back Saquon Barkley threatening to hold out until the Giants gave him a contract that he felt matched his value as a player. Barkley declined the franchise tag as a result of this hold out, yesterday, July 25th Saquon and the Giants reached a deal which keeps him in New York for another year and gives both parties more time to reach a longer tenured deal.

Saquon Barkley at Training Camp

Another big story coming into practice today was the announced contract extension of Offensive Tackle Andrew Thomas which happened right before the doors opened for camp today. Thomas’s deal is a five year extension worth $117.5 million. Thomas has played a vital role in the Giants rebuilding their offensive line which has been a plague for the team in long memory.

Here are some notes from today’s camp.

  • The Door for WR 1 is wide open, Isaiah Hodgins, Darius Slayton and 3rd Round Draft Pick Jaylin Hyatt all put on impressive displays from the offensive side
  • Darren Waller put on a clinic at Tight End today in his first practice as a Giant, he will likely be the starter heading into Opening Week
  • The Free Agent signing of Running Back James Robinson may pay off, the running back showed great flashes of potential as he may be Saquon’s trusty backup and potential replacement if Barkley gets injured
  • Some notable names were not at practice today as Wide Receivers Sterling Shepherd and Wan’dale Robinson are currently on the PUP List
  • Quarterback Daniel Jones stayed behind after camp ended to get a few more practice reps in, Wide Receivers Isaiah Hodgins, Cole Beasley and Tight End Lawrence Cager stayed behind with Jones for the extra practice
