MIAMI GARDENS – The Miami Hurricanes got their first win at home this season against the Clemson Tigers.
It was a big ACC win for the Canes and head coach Mario Cristobal, who desperately needed this one after two back-to-back losses to Georgia Tech (3-4) North Carolina (6-1) in their last two matchups. Through the tough weeks Miami has had, this win was a breakthrough last night.
Freshman quarterback Emory Williams handled business as he covered for starter quarterback Tyler Van Dyke. Interestingly, Van Dyke did not dress in last night’s game but was impactful to a young freshman playing against a tough defense.
Williams was settled but threw an early interception in the first half.
The second half is when things opened up for the young quarterback, whose connection with Colbie Young concluded with multiple big plays from these two. His go-to was 6-for-8 with a 76-yarder.
Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney did not explain how the forced fumble and turnover happened. He just said it happened.
“We got exactly what we deserved. We turned the ball over and we did not run the ball well, but they certainly did,” Swinney discussed.
The Clemson head coach was referring to the forced fumbles by true freshman Rueben Bain, who was all over Clemson’s quarterback causing a strip sack.
Bain ended with two sacks and two tackles for loss.
“He just plays the game at a relentless level and tonight it really showed,” Cristobal stated about Bain’s performance.
Coming down to the wire, Miami’s defense contained Clemson’s run game, causing what may have been a safety but was not counted leading the two teams to overtime.
This is Miami’s first ACC win since 2010 against Clemson.
Miami’s next game is Virginia at home. The kickoff at Hard Rock Stadium is at 3:30 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 28.
