WEST PALM BEACH – Tovani Mizell’s first full season at Cardinal Newman was one to remember.
As a sophomore, the 6-foot-1, 200-pound running back made sure to capitalize on his opportunity to shine on the field. He finished with 1,136 total yards (616 rushing, 481 receiving, 39 return yards) and 14 total touchdowns.
Our Co-Underclassman of the Year for Private Schools played his best game against John Carroll Catholic in Week 5, when he rushed for more than 150 yards in his team’s 17-7 road win.
Mizell gave credit to his offensive line.
“They did an amazing job,” Mizell said. “They are coming back next year and hopefully we will improve.”
Mizell also credited freshman quarterback and close friend Davi Belfort – who recently transferred from Cardinal Newman to Dillard – for how he emerged as a successful pass catcher out of the backfield.
“He helped me out a lot because I trained with him before we became teammates,” Mizell said of Belfort. “So the chemistry was already there.”
Finally, Mizell mentioned head coach Jack Daniels, who led Cardinal Newman to a 9-4 overall record and two Class 3A playoff wins that resulted in a 3A-Region 4 final appearance.
“Coach Daniels is a good coach and has the program going in the right direction,” Mizell said. “He put the team in position to be successful.”
PLEASE NOTE: Mizell will be sharing the Underclassman of the Year – Private honor with St. Andrew’s junior running back Bill Young.
The other nominees are Benjamin sophomore running back Chauncey Bowens and King’s Academy junior quarterback Will Prichard.
