In the semi-finals Columbus rallied in the second half to defeat Western 68–63 in a fast paced, back and forth contest that featured 10 lead changes and clutch late-game shooting.

Fast Start Sets the Tone

Columbus edged Western at the end of the first quarter, setting the stage for a tightly contested battle. The second quarter quickly turned into an offensive showcase. Florida Atlantic signee Felipe Quinones sparked Columbus early in the period with a 2-point to extend the lead. Western responded immediately as Calvin Thompson knocked down a 3-pointer. The teams traded baskets over the next several minutes, with neither side able to create separation.

Miami’s prized signee Caleb Gaskins began to heat up midway through the quarter, with a free throw to help Columbus regain momentum. Quinones added a key 3-pointer to push Columbus ahead, but Western answered behind strong play from Xavier Christie and Jovan Rodriguez. Columbus closed the half strong, getting contributions from Akol Nyok and Gaskins to take a slim lead into halftime.

Western Surges in the Third

Western came out aggressive in the third quarter, quickly flipping the script. Jovan Rodriguez scored inside to give Western its first lead of the half, and a series of three- pointers pushed the advantage. Calvin Thompson buried another 3-pointer during the surge, and Western’s perimeter shooting briefly put Columbus on its heels. Felipe Quinones responded with a 3-point shot of his own and added a free throw, but Western carried a lead into the fourth quarter.

Gaskins Takes Over Late

The fourth quarter belonged to Caleb Gaskins. He scored inside to cut the deficit, then Jordan Fisher drained a clutch 3-pointer to give Columbus a lead, its first advantage of the quarter. From there, Gaskins took control. He hit a 3-pointer to extend the lead and knocking down multiple foul shots to seal the win. Western stayed within striking distance behind late points from Kaleb Georgeon, Jeshua Ruskin, and Christie, but Columbus’ composure at the line proved to be the difference.

Final Push Secures the Victory

In the closing minute, Columbus capitalized on repeated Western fouls. Gaskins calmly converted free throw after free throw, stretching the margin to seven points and closing out the 68–63 victory. Columbus improves with a hard-earned victory, while Western walks away knowing it was a game decided by a few key possessions down the stretch.
