Column talk: Seminole Ridge-West Boca Raton-Lake Worth spring jamboree

LOXAHATCHEE – It was a spring jamboree to remember this past Friday night (May 18).

The three-team slate of spring games that took place a few nights ago featured some action from Seminole Ridge, West Boca Raton, and Lake Worth. Here are some observations from each program.

LOOK AHEAD: SEMINOLE RIDGE

Seminole Ridge is a young team on the offensive side of the ball.

Quarterback Kaimyn Castilla is the only offensive returning starter from last year’s team. Although the head signal-caller from a year ago is back, the offense is under a lot of change due to the hire of new head coach Rick Casko.

Casko is no rookie to Palm Beach County football. He had stints at John I. Leonard, Atlantic, and Glades Central, with the latter being his previous stop from 2014 until 2016. So look forward for his impact to be felt on this Hawks football team.

The Hawks defense appears to be years ahead of the offense. They have a veteran defense that is led by returning talented cornerback Ty’Korian Brown, who will be ready to play with the best.

LOOK AHEAD: WEST BOCA RATON

West Boca will be right up there with the best of them at the skill positions.

The Bulls will have some work to do on the offense and defensive line, though. They will have to be at their very best, especially in District 13-7A, which has the likes of Dwyer, Forest Hill, and Olympic Heights at the top of it.

The Bulls also have a new head coach in Michael Cook. He takes over the helm after longtime head coach Alphonso Moran stepped down.

But don’t feel sorry for the Bulls. Cook is instilling a fight in the team, so it will be a good idea to keep an eye on them in the summer and fall months ahead.

LOOK AHEAD: LAKE WORTH

The Lake Worth Trojans also have a new head coach in Donald Hannah.

The former Village Academy (Delray Beach) head coach has some work to do with this Trojans team in changing the culture. Lake Worth is a talented team that will benefit from gaining a dollop of leadership and experience over time.

In the spring jamboree, the Trojans offense failed to score in two separate halves of football against the Hawks and the Bulls. The defense showed some flashes, but couldn’t hold it together over a half of football in each game.

But if anyone can turn this program around, it’s Hannah. He has already proven his worth at Village Academy in the past.
