Cuba continued its strong run in the World Baseball Classic, securing a 7–4 victory over Colombia national baseball team thanks to an explosive start at the plate and pitching that held steady through several tense moments.
The Cuban offense wasted no time making an impact. In the opening inning, catcher Ariel Martínez delivered the biggest swing of the night, crushing a three-run home run that immediately gave Cuba control of the game.
Moments later, veteran infielder Erisbel Arruebarrena added to the early momentum with a solo shot, extending the lead to 4–1 and putting pressure on the Colombian pitching staff from the start.
Although Cuba finished the night with just six hits compared to five for Colombia, the difference came from power and timely hitting. Cuba produced two home runs and 14 total bases, capitalizing when runners reached base and maximizing their scoring chances.
On the mound, right hander Denny Larrondo helped anchor the effort alongside the Cuban bullpen. Colombia managed to generate traffic on the bases throughout the game, but the pitching staff limited the damage, allowing only four runs while stranding seven Colombian runners.
Cuba’s defense also played a key role, executing cleanly in crucial moments to prevent Colombia from fully erasing the early deficit.
Even when Colombia threatened to close the gap late, Cuba responded by tightening up defensively and maintaining the advantage created in the opening innings.
With the win, Cuba improves to 2–0 in group play, strengthening its case as a serious contender to advance in the tournament. As the competition continues in Puerto Rico, Cuba’s blend of power hitting, disciplined pitching, and timely defense is proving to be a formula capable of carrying the team deep into the international tournament.
