WELLINGTON – Earl Evoy Jr. is quietly making a impact on the line for the Wellington Wolverines.
After two regular season games played, the senior defensive end has 12 tackles and three tackles for loss.
In Week 1, Evoy Jr. had five tackles and tackles for loss in Wellington’s 41-0 road win over Park Vista.
“I would say that we handled business, and all did our jobs as a team for a great team win,” Evoy Jr. said.
Evoy Jr’s most impactful game to date was in Week 2 at Martin County, when his name was called quite often by the game’s announcer after plays to the tune of seven tackles and two tackles for loss.
Evoy Jr. (6-foot-2, 235 pounds) spoke on how his senior season has been going at this particular juncture with Wellington.
“I’d say it’s going as planned so far,” Evoy Jr. said. “I got a long rest of the season to keep improving and proving people wrong.”
With the impactful performance that Evoy Jr. had against Martin County, he was selected by our Twitter voters as our Breakthrough Player of Week 2.
“I would say that we played our hearts out,” Evoy Jr. said of the Martin County game, which resulted in a 42-7 road loss for Wellington. “We just had some mistakes on defense. But we had a lot of positive notes throughout the game.”
At this time, Evoy Jr. does not have a college scholarship offer to speak of. But this situation can change sometime soon, as schools such as Alabama State are showing interest to the rising star lineman.
Evoy Jr. on Alabama State:
“I’d say right now Alabama State is showing me the most interest,” said Evoy Jr., who played this past season as a junior for St. Thomas Aquinas and won a state title (7A) with the 13-time state championship powerhouse program.
“Since I went to a camp there over the summer, the coaches liked me a lot,” Evoy Jr. said. “I did very well and went 3-on-3 on the 1-on-1’s. And about the Alabama State visit, I think the stadium and facilities stood out to me the most.”
Going back to high school football now, Evoy Jr. said he is grateful to Wellington head coach Danny Mendoza for his support and more.
“Coach Mendoza is more than a coach to all of his players,” Evoy Jr. said. “He teaches us to be good young men on and off the field by being respectful to everyone. He preaches everyday that it’s bigger than football and to be kind and respectful.”
Evoy Jr. and his Wellington teammates will be facing off against a well-coached Jensen Beach team tonight at home. Set for a 6:30 p.m. kickoff time, Wellington is 1–1 and looking to fend off a challenge from a Jensen Beach program that seeks its first 3-0 start in recent memory.
With that said, Evoy Jr. is focused on his individual and team goals – all of which are within full reach at this time.
“My individual goals are to be First Team All-County, compete for All-State, and to leave a legacy at Wellington,” Evoy Jr. said. “My team goals are to have a winning record, beat PBC (Palm Beach Central), and to make it to at least the second round of the playoffs. They are all doable at the very least.”
