BOCA RATON – Boynton Beach (6-2) squeaked out a 40-35 victory over St. Andrew’s (5-2).

This was an electric game all the way down to the wire with three ties happening throughout this one.

The Smith Family dominated this game for Boynton Beach as they scored all six touchdowns for their team last night (Oct. 13).

Senior quarterback Tyrone Smith scored on a quarterback sneak for a touchdown that put the Tigers up 14-7 in the second quarter.

Fellow senior Bobby Smith Jr. (Palm Beach County’s No. 1-ranked running back) had himself a game last night, as he literally put the team on his back as expected.

Smith Jr. ran for 120 yards and four rushing touchdowns. He looked like a man amongst boys at times with the ball in his hand as he was a lot for the Scots to handle.

Smith Jr. gave kudos to his offensive line that contributed to his stellar performance.

“Offensive line was clicking today,” Smith Jr. said. “We just kept driving down the field. Offensive lineman Edwin Jean had four or five pancakes and our center Stanley Cadet played a big part tonight because we usually run off of him every time.”

Junior Bobby T. Smith scored one rushing touchdown that seem to be the nail in the coffin for the Tigers. His dashing touchdown gave his team a 40-21 lead at the start of the fourth quarter.

For the Scots, Teddy Hoffmann was a man on a mission. It seemed like he caught every ball that came his way, including a pass from quarterback Jacob Cashion midway through second to tie the game at 14-14.

Running back Bill Young got the Scots on board first on a short run.

Meanwhile, Cashion was on the money once again last night as he was able to almost wheel his team to a big comeback win.

Down by 19 points in the fourth quarterback, Cashion scored on an unprecedented 60-plus-yard quarterback scramble with 10 minutes left to close gap to 40-28.

Cashion and Luke Sadaka would connect with 55 seconds left in the game to close the gap down to 40-35.

The Scots would try for an onside kick, but they would be unable to recover.

Tigers senior linebacker Dimansky Jean-Claude set the game off with interception that was nearly a pick-six. He also had some big tackles for losses.

Senior defensive tackle Joshua Lewis held things down at the nose tackle position. He had a big fumble recovery that was caused by senior defensive back Schneider Joseph

“Tonight we had to conceal the quarterback,”Lewis said. “We knew he was a runner, but at the end of the day we did our job. We had to prove a point tonight. A lot of people doubted us by saying Boynton is not that good. We proved a point.”

Boynton Beach head coach Clifford Fruge commented on his team’s District 10-2M win.

“We came in focused and doing the things we’ve done all year,” Fruge said. “We’re going to stay focused and focus on the goal at hand. We have bye week and then we’e focusing on American Heritage. We’re going into that game serious.”

This game felt like the rivalry we never knew we needed to see. It will be interesting to see how the playoff battle shakes out for both squads as this game could very well be the indicator of who will be crowned district champs.

Although the Scots fell short in this one, you can tell they have a lot of heart and spirit no matter how the odds are stacked against them.

The next game for St. Andrews will be at home in Week 9 against Lake Highland Prep (5-0); Friday, Oct. 21 at 6 p.m.).

Boynton Beach will have a much-needed bye in Week 9. The next game will be in Week 10 at home for the District 10-2M title against American Heritage-Delray Beach (2-4; Friday, Oct. 28 at 6:30 p.m.).
