The World Baseball Classic got underway in Miami with a strong statement from the Dominican Republic national baseball team, who defeated the Nicaragua national baseball team 12–3 in their Pool D matchup at loan Depot Park.
Early Pressure from Nicaragua
Nicaragua came out aggressive and briefly challenged the Dominican powerhouse early in the game. RBI hits in the first two innings helped Nicaragua take a 3–2 lead, putting early pressure on the Dominican pitching staff and surprising the crowd.
Dominican starter Cristopher Sánchez struggled early but escaped a critical jam, even recording a rare four-strikeout inning during the game an unusual feat made possible by a dropped third strike.
Dominican Stars Take Over
After tying the game 3–3 in the third inning, the Dominican lineup began to show why it is considered one of the strongest in the tournament. Junior Caminero launching a two-run home run in the sixth inning to give the Dominican Republic the lead. Julio Rodríguez adding a home run and multiple RBIs later in the game. Oneil Cruz crushing a towering 450-foot three-run homer during a massive eighth-inning rally.
The Dominican offense exploded for six runs in the eighth inning, turning a close contest into a dominant victory.
Offensive Firepower
The Dominican Republic finished with 14 hits and three home runs, while Nicaragua managed nine hits but struggled to contain the Dominican lineup late in the game. Other offensive contributions came from stars such as Vladimir Guerrero Jr. and Ketel Marte, who helped spark rallies throughout the game.
What the Win Means
The victory gives the Dominican Republic an early 1–0 record in Pool D. With their deep roster full of Major League talent and a powerful offensive performance, the Dominican Republic immediately established itself as one of the favorites to win the tournament.
