Embracing the grind: QB Mason Brown gets in challenge mode

PORT ST. LUCIE – For the second offseason, Mason Brown will be competing in the Jacksonville Jaguars PREP High School Quarterback Skills Challenge.

The Tradition Prep (Port St. Lucie) 2026 signal caller was one of four area players selected by event officials to participate. He will be joined by:

•Chase Donnon (Vero Beach 2026 quarterback) – Football

•Adrienne Rivera (Fort Pierce Central 2025 quarterback) – Flag Football

•Chaunciona Davis (Fort Pierce Central 2026 quarterback) – Flag Football

Brown on last year’s experience and being invited back to the Jaguars High School Quarterback Skills Challenge on Sunday, Feb. 18:

“Last year’s Jaguars QB Challenge was tough because there were quarterbacks from all around and a Florida Gator commit was there, so the competition was definitely fun to go against,” Brown said. “I’m just grateful that I’m invited again because I love putting in work and showing it to others. It’s my time to prove to myself who I wanna be at the quarterback position, and I just love grinding and competing at that competition.”

The primary reason why Brown has been invited back is because he’s one of the area’s rising stars at his position and overall. We have proof of this fact via statistics and film from his sophomore season.

Let us pull up the stat sheet for the 6-foot, 160-pound standout and team captain. In nine games played for Tradition Prep throughout the 2023 campaign, Brown registered the following – per MaxPreps:

•91 pass completions

•182 pass attempts

•1,154 passing yards – No. 1 in SSAA (Sunshine State Athletic Association) Atlantic Coast

•13 touchdown passes

•7 interceptions 

•14 rushing yards

•0 fumbles

Brown’s best game this past season came in Week 2. He led Tradition Prep to its first regular season win in school history (36-27 home triumph over Jupiter Christian on Aug. 31, 2023) with the following statistics – per MaxPreps:

•6 pass completions 

•13 pass attempts 

•141 yards

•3 touchdown passes

•0 interceptions 

•125.3 passer rating – personal best 

“My best game in my opinion this past season had to be Jupiter Christian because of how we played them last year,” Brown said. “We lost by a lot the first time we played them. And for me to throw no interceptions and three touchdowns against that defense – which is really good – it felt good because of how great their coaching and chemistry is. I feel like I gave our team the best chance to win, and that’s what we did.”

Brown spoke on Tradition Prep head coach Shawn McGrath and his coaching staff, who have been instrumental in his success at the quarterback position.

“My thoughts on Coach McGrath and the coaching staff is out of the roof,” Brown said. “I can’t thank them enough for pushing me in the classroom with my grades and especially on the field and weight room to make me the best player I can be. I really like how he and Coach Jonathan Barr helped me get to this point of football in my life.”

McGrath returned Brown the favor by speaking highly of him and his play.

“Mason is a great young leader,” McGrath said of Brown, who has received some college interest from the likes of Baylor, Miami (Ohio), and Louisiana. “His ability to stay calm and keep the team focused on the ultimate goal is what makes him a special leader. Going into his third year in the program, he has shown growth that is impressive. We expect Mason will execute at his typical high level at the Jaguars camp this year. Mason has stood on the field with type level Power 5 conference quarterbacks and out played them. We expect the same greatness in Jacksonville.”
