RIVIERA BEACH – Any coach would be blessed to have a player like William Wells on his team.
All one needs to do right now is speak with Suncoast head coach Jimmy Clark, who has a true game changer in his program. With his academic and athletic abilities in top form, the Chargers cannot go wrong with Wells.
“He is not a Top 25 kid…he’s a Top 10 kid,” Clark said of Wells. “He is 6-foot-2.5, 180 pounds, and is a legit low 4.5 (40-yard dash time). He’s not a stat kid, but he had 2 punt returns for touchdowns and 5 touchdown catches. He played at quarterback, wide receiver, cornerback, and strong safety. He was the best tackler on our team last season.”
What else did Wells do for Suncoast in 2019?
“He returned kicks and punts,” Clark said. “He never left the field. His film says it all.”
When looking at his Hudl highlights, one could see that Wells doesn’t even need the ball to impact a game. He’s that unique player who can change the trajectory of a team’s season in more ways than one.
In Week 5 against Jupiter, Wells blew past the opposition to find himself open in the end zone for an 11-yard touchdown catch. This play was one of many in which he created an opportunity for himself and for his team in a positive way.
“It was a corner route on fourth down to take the lead,” said Wells, who helped Suncoast keep the game close in what turned out to be a 23-13 loss to Jupiter.
Wells spoke on how his junior year went at Suncoast, which finished with a 5-5 record in 2019.
“It didn’t end how I wanted to,” he said. “But overall, it was a good year. I didn’t accomplish a couple things I wanted to, but senior year is gonna be something different, God willing.”
At this time, Wells is in great shape due to his overall production as a junior. It has resulted in him gaining a total of six offers from Utah, Syracuse, Washington State, UCF, FAU, and South Dakota.
And when the real offers started rolling in earlier this month, all except for Washington State have been made official.
Wells made it clear where he stands on his college recruiting process.
“To be honest, I don’t really have a number one pick,” he said. “I’m taking them all into consideration. I’m blessed to have the opportunity to play at whichever one I decide to go to.”
Wells also let it be known that he will take his time to evaluate each college that has offered him.
“To be honest with you, I couldn’t even give a date,” Wells said of when he will make his final decision.
Wells is currently our No. 1-ranked athlete and No. 6 overall player in Palm Beach County. And provided that Suncoast will get to play this upcoming season – the trajectory of the COVID-19 pandemic will ultimately determine that – we can see more from one of Palm Beach County’s very best players in his class.
Regardless of how things turn out with his senior season, Wells will make sure he is the best possible situation for his future. We will be closely watching to see how it all unfolds.
