Boca Raton, FL – Florida Atlantic University looks to bring the Shula Trophy back to Boca.

If you don’t know anything about Florida Atlantic University, you should definitely know about the on going rivalry between Florida Atlantic University and Florida International University. The Shula bowl rivalry gives bragging rights for an entire year to not only the winning team but the winning school. Taking home the Don Shula Award also adds incentive for both teams to win.

This Saturday the FAU owls will host the FIU panthers at 7pm to duke it out to see who can hoist the Don Shula Award. Saturday will be the 16th time the two squads have faced off, FAU currently leads the series 10-5. FIU currently hoist the Shula Trophy after their 33-31 win over FAU last year on October 1st.

FAU currently holds a record of (7-3) overall, (6-0 CUSA) and currently riding a six game winning streak after a (1-3) start early in the season. FAU is ranked number one in Conference USA east. FIU currently holds a (6-3), (4-2 CUSA) and ranked third in the Conference USA east standings. FIU most recently suffered a 37-30 loss to CUSA opponent Old Dominion on November 11th.

The Shula Bowl is probably one the most slept on rivalries in college football but this game means a lot to both squads. Although the Owls had two bad practices in a row according Lane Kiffin he’s optimistic his team will show up to play. During a post practice interview with Kiffin he stated “We’ll have Joe ( Former New York Yankees Manager) out there Saturday night and were going to put a show on for him” when being asked about the Shula Bowl.

A revenge factor may be looming for the Owls as Defensive Back Jalen Young stated during his post practice interview that “We want this game badly. I always have that chip on my shoulder when it comes to FIU.”

The Shula Bowl will be a bigger game than usual for FAU as they take the field Saturday and this is do to the fact that the Owls can secure a spot in the Conference USA championship game with a victory over FIU. FAU has a 88.5% chance of winning according to ESPN’s matchup predictor. Although FAU is the favorite you can never predict the results of a rivalry game like this one.
