GAINESVILLE – In a release from earlier today (April 20), the Florida High School Athletic Association (FHSAA) has decided to halt all spring sports in our state.
This move was expected due to the decision by Gov. Ron DeSantis over the past weekend to close all schools in the state for the remainder of the 2019-2020 academic year.
It can be said that the FHSAA made a sound choice here, considering the fact our state currently has a total of more than 26,660 coronavirus cases and 789 deaths, according to multiple media outlets. This is proof, once and for all, that the FHSAA has the best interests of the entire student body and anyone else who is affiliated with them.
“Following Governor Ron DeSantis’ announcement mandating schools continue distance learning for the remainder of the 2019-20 school year, it is with heavy hearts that the FHSAA has decided to cancel all FHSAA affiliated events, inclusive of the state series and all championship events, for spring sports,” the FHSAA said in a released statement.
“The safety of our student-athletes, coaches, officials, and fans is our top priority,” the FHSAA continued. “With the evolving threat of the CORONAVIRUS (COVID-19), we must ensure that we do not contribute to the spread of this illness. We are deeply saddened for our student-athletes who have seen their seasons and/or high school careers end so abruptly. Our Association knows the impact and role high school athletics play in the lives of so many and will continue to work towards the betterment of high school sports. We know this is a trying time, but the health and safety of all is of utmost importance to this Association.”
In addition to this announcement, it has been revealed that the Class of 2020 will not get an extra year of eligibility for spring sports.
“To all our senior student-athletes, we thank you for dedicating your time and efforts to your school, your coaches, and your teammates,” the FHSAA said in its statement. “Cherish the memories you have made and embrace all that the future holds for you. While we are saddened that you are unable to compete this season, we could not be prouder to have been represented by such hard-working individuals.”
The FHSAA provided some advice for everyone to follow in this critical time.
“Our Association is eager to reconvene all sports in the 2020-21 school year,” the FHSAA said. “In the meantime, we strongly encourage everyone to continue adhering to the recommendations of the CDC (Centers for Disease and Control) and your local health departments during this hiatus. Please remember to practice social distancing, frequently wash your hands and avoid touching your face.”
NOTE: Fall football practices are currently scheduled to begin on July 27. The hope right now for players and coaches is that it would safe to engage with each other by then.
But in all honesty, there’s no guarantee the state of Florida will even have a football season this upcoming fall.
Stay tuned for further updates on this all-important situation.
