MIAMI – The FIU Golden Panthers are looking to get back on track again.
How good are the Golden Panthers?
This may be a question some have after seeing the Panthers two-game win streak come to an end this past Saturday, which was a 31-17 loss to No. 16 Miami in Week 4. This loss came after a 63-14 victory over UMass and a prior takedown of Old Dominion, a team that went on to upset previous No. 13-ranked Virginia Tech in Week 4.
FIU (2-2) will be at home on Saturday as it takes on Arkansas-Pine Bluff (1-3). This won’t exactly be the best opponent on FIU’s schedule this year, but it will be another opportunity for the Panthers to put on a show in front of their home crowd and start a new winning streak.
James Morgan has been a leader for FIU. He has completed 50 percent of his passes or better through four games, with eight passing touchdowns, and 716 passing yards.
Although Morgan has made some mistakes this season, he’s definitely done enough to show he’s “the guy” for FIU.
Some of Morgan’s favorite top targets are wide receivers CJ Worton (14 catches, 294 yards, and three touchdowns) and Maurice Alexander (6 catches, 92 yards, and two touchdowns).
With the absence of Anthony Jones, running back Shawndarrius Phillips has emerged as the primary runner, and he’s put together a pretty good season so far. Phillips has tallied 53 carries for 250 yards and four touchdowns in four games played.
Fermin Silva anchors the Panthers defense with his relentless pursuit. Silva has eleven tackles, three tackles for loss, two sacks, and one forced fumble thus far, even though Silva did not play in the UMass game.
FIU should be able to handle this Arkansas-Pine Bluff squad come Saturday, as the road team has been blown out in the last two weeks 62-13 against Prairie View, and 90-6 against South Dakota State.
FIU will host Arkansas-Pine Bluff Saturday, Sept. 29 at 7:30 p.m.
