FORT LAUDERDALE – Another heavyweight spring game went on down south between Cardinal Gibbons and Dwyer.

Both the Gibbons and Dwyer defenses will be really good this year. These units showed lots of promise in more ways than one.

Both teams kept each other in check for most of the first half and for the entire third quarter. The lone score came on a short run by Gibbons quarterback Nik Scalzo with 8:19 left in the first quarter.

From that point until the fourth quarter, Gibbons was on top with a 7-0 lead. In the final frame, both teams pulled their starters and let their underclassmen take over.

The game ended with a 21-7 win in favor of Gibbons.

Dwyer’s lone score came in the fourth quarter, which was a pass from quarterback James Dailey to running back Reggie Gadson.

Dwyer’s offense showed some flashes of things to come in the future. But the biggest question mark for Dwyer will be at quarterback.

Case in point: Dwyer featured four different quarterbacks in tonight’s spring game. It was a situation that longtime head coach Jack Daniels was willing to speak on.

“It’s difficult,” Daniels said. “We just have to pick one and go with him as our guy. We need to evaluate and decide.”

Daniels would evaluate his team’s overall performance in tonight’s contest.

“We played a good football team tonight,” Daniels said. “We have very good players. I was impressed with our guys tonight.”

Dwyer offensive lineman Ronald Folkes is as good as advertised. Folkes went head-to-head with top prospect Kris Bogle of Gibbons and held his own against the stellar defensive end.

“I want to show that I’m the best,” Folkes said. “It’s senior year. I need it all.”

Dwyer’s defense had a stellar showing tonight as they went toe to toe with a very talented offense in Cardinal Gibbons.

Panthers defensive back Colby Dempsey showed up late in the first quarter and intercepted a Gibbons quarterback pass, as he juggled the ball around a couple times before securing the ball.

Meanwhile, Panthers defensive end Ishmael Goulbourne and defensive tackle Vernon Padgett showed they’ll be a lethal combination for their team this fall. Goulbourne stripped and body slammed the Gibbons quarterback, while Padgett cleaned up behind him by recovering the fumble and returning it for a few yards before he got tackled by a host of Gibbons players.

Padgett also had a sack toward the end of the first half. His big play essentially ended a promising Gibbons drive.

Cardinal Gibbons has something special brewing down south as they have a team full of talent, size, and speed. The Chiefs will look to have another big year and look to make a run at the Class 5A state title.

Bogle was a juggernaut in tonight’s game, as he seemed to be unblockable at times by playing with a high level of intensity. He was able to come up with two sacks in tonight’s contest.

“I have a big chip on my shoulder,” Bogle said. “I got to play hard and practice hard each and every day. It’s only going to get me and my teammates better.”

Cardinal Gibbons head coach Matt Dubuc spoke about tonight’s game.

“It’s a spring game,” Dubuc said. “It’s always nice to finish with a win, but ultimately we got to play every player tonight. It was great playing a quality opponent tonight.”
