Four Palm Beach County high school football alums shine in FAU Pro Day

BOCA RATON – A total of 22 former FAU football players partook in Pro Day earlier this week (Mar. 26) in front of scouts from the CFL, AAF, and 29 NFL teams at FAU Stadium.

Of those 22 players, four of them played high school football in Palm Beach County: RB Devin Singletary, (Delray Beach-American Heritage; 2016 alum), RB Gerald Hearns (Dwyer; 2014 alum), RB Kerrith Whyte (Seminole Ridge) and S Jalen Young (Seminole Ridge). Whyte and Young were high school football teammates who graduated together in 2015.

While it was starter Devin Singletary who usually had people talking during season, backup running back Kerrith Whyte was the talk of the combine after performing successfully in multiple drills. The 5-10, 197-pound back ran the fastest 40-yard dash at the Pro Day with a time of 4.36 seconds, while also having the highest vertical leap with 42 inches.

Both of those numbers were higher than any running back invited to last month’s NFL combine.

“(I’ve) been training for 2 ½ months,” said Whyte following his Pro Day performance. “…I’m just thankful for the opportunity to be this far.”

On the other hand, Singletary attempted the 40 once but pulled up early after feeling tightness in his hamstring. He sat out the rest of the day for precautionary reasons.

Singletary leaves FAU as the school’s all-time leading rusher with 66 rushing touchdowns and 4,299 rushing yards.

Young, who was named to C-USA second team, ran the 40 in 4.81 seconds and recorded a 32-inch vertical.

Hearns, the third running back of the group, ran a 4.72 time in the 40 had a 31-inch vertical.

The NFL Draft takes place on the weekend of April 25-27 in Nashville, Tenn.
