MIAMI – Scores of unsigned high school seniors have registered to take part in the Orange Bowl Showcase for a host of college scholarship opportunities.
This is the fourth year that the Orange Bowl Committee has decided to assemble an event geared primarily toward the advancement of South Florida’s underrated high school football athletes.
The showcase will happen tomorrow (Feb. 29; 9 a.m. until 3 p.m.) at St. Thomas University in Miami Gardens. And for those who have not registered online, there will be a final opportunity to do so tomorrow from 7 a.m. until 9 a.m.
Walk-ups who did not register prior to Saturday morning will be expected to arrive around 7 a.m. Lines will almost certainly be long, so it would be best for our unsigned and unregistered seniors to expedite the registration process in the morning.
According to the Orange Bowl Committee, there will be at least 38 senior participants this year from Palm Beach County. There could be a lot more of our area players in the showcase, which means we won’t know who decides to participate until the event actually happens in real time.
Here’s a rundown of what we all could expect.
7:00 a.m. – 9:00 a.m.: Registration
9:00 a.m. – 9:15 a.m.: Student-Athlete Welcome
9:15 a.m. – 9:25 a.m.: College Coaches Welcome
9:30 a.m. – 11:30 a.m.: Linemen Drills/Skill Players Testing
11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.: Skill Players Drills/Linemen Testing
1:30 p.m. – 3:00 p.m.: 7-on-7 Games/Student-Athletes Meet with College Coaches
For senior athletes who have not registered already, a 2.5 grade point average and either a 920 SAT score or 18 ACT score is required. There will be a plethora of Division II, Division III, and NAIA schools on hand (coaches and/or athletic directors) to speak with the attendees tomorrow.
