Miami Gardens, Fl- Notre Dame head coach Marcus Freeman struck a confident tone this week as the Fighting Irish prepare to open their season against a ranked opponent. For Freeman, these early-season challenges are less about intimidation and more about opportunity.

“Facing a top team right away forces us to sharpen our focus,” Freeman said. “It gives our guys motivation and shows them where we stand immediately.”

One of the players drawing praise from Freeman is running back Jeremiyah Love, described as a “complete back” who has earned the staff’s trust. Loves ball security and consistent play throughout preseason practices have made him a key piece of the Irish offense.

Much of the spotlight, however, falls on quarterback CJ Carr, who will lead the team in his first major start. Freeman highlighted Carr’s physical ability and his command of the game before the snap, crediting his progress in setting protections and recognizing defenses. Beyond the mechanics, Freeman believes Carr’s growing confidence and leadership will elevate the play of those around him.

Defensively, Freeman pointed to the team’s depth as a strength, especially at the defensive end position. He praised Bryce Young for his growth both physically and mentally, saying the junior has developed into a complete player.

This season marks the fifth straight year Notre Dame will open on the road, a challenge Freeman says his team embraces. Veteran leaders remind teammates of the value in staying resilient no matter the environment.

As Freeman put it, success will come down to leadership and quarterback play. “Our guys have shown they can handle both adversity and success,” he said. “That’s the type of mindset you need to start strong and carry it through the season.”
