WEST PALM BEACH – Get you a player like Sebastian Scott.
Anyone who has the incoming sophomore on their side should consider themselves to be blessed. Just ask his teammates and coaches at Cardinal Newman.
Scott’s freshman year was great in a sense. Although the Crusaders didn’t win a playoff game – they finished with a 7-3 record in a Class 3A first-round playoff loss at home to the Benjamin Buccaneers (33-16) – they did find out about a key cornerstone of their lines.
Playing both ways but mainly at the defensive tackle position, Scott recorded 34 tackles (9 TFL’s), 6 sacks, 1 forced fumble, and 1 blocked field goal on special team. His best game was in Week 10’s 35-21 win over American Heritage (Delray Beach), when he tallied 3 tackles (1 TFL) and 1.5 sacks.
“I think it went well,” Scott said. “It didn’t end like I wanted, but it was good. I had a winning season, made the playoffs, and started on varsity as a freshman. I think I played well throughout the season.”
The offseason has been good to the 6-foot-3, 320-pound defensive tackle. Normally this does not happen after a player’s freshman season, but Scott managed to gain his first offer from Tennessee.
A Power 5 offer from an SEC school is a big thing these days. If a player from Palm Beach County obtains something like that, he knows to treasure it in a special way.
“I was happy, shocked, and thankful,” Scott said. “I always enjoyed SEC football. To have a school in the SEC offer was a dream come true.”
Also in the offseason, Scott has been working out on his own due to the current COVID-19 pandemic. To keep himself in top shape and get even better at his craft as a lineman, the rising star has been spending time at his neighborhood sandpit and at a designated area spot with his trainer.
Provided there is a football season, Scott is hoping to achieve at least 10 sacks, an interception, and a forced fumble as a sophomore.
“I want to dominate every snap,” Scott said. “I want my team to have a winning season and win states this year.”
