Denver, CO.- One thing I’ve learned throughout my years of covering college basketball: don’t doubt a Dusty May led team in March.
Tonight (March 20), the Michigan Wolverines faced off against the UC San Diego Tritons in the opening round of the 2025 NCAA Tournament. After an eventful day full of upsets, emotions, busted brackets and all around good basketball, it was only fitting that the primetime night cap was just as electric.
Michigan showcased their talents early in the game, leading 41-27 at halftime. However, UC San Diego bounced back in the second half, mounting a significant comeback that brought them within striking distance. The Tritons’ guard, Tyler McGhie, delivered an outstanding performance, scoring 25 points and securing nine rebounds.
The Wolverines’ center, Vladislav Goldin, played a pivotal role, contributing 14 points. Despite facing foul trouble and picking up his fourth personal foul with 8:25 remaining, Goldin remained impactful. In the game’s final moments, he grabbed a crucial offensive rebound and sank two free throws with 19.3 seconds left, extending Michigan’s lead to 68-65.
Following the late Goldin free throws, UC San Diego had an opportunity to tie the game in the closing seconds. McGhie attempted a contested three-pointer at the buzzer, but the shot was off, allowing Michigan to escape with the win.
This game marked the end of UC San Diego’s inaugural appearance in the NCAA Tournament, following their transition to Division I eligibility. They entered the tournament with the nation’s longest winning streak, having won 15 consecutive games and clinching both the Big West regular-season and tournament titles.
As for Michigan, the Wolverines will advance to the Round of 32, facing off against Texas A&M on Saturday, March 22.
