FORT PIERCE, FL.- It was a great day for Coach Callovi and the Wolverine’s flag football team who clinched a bid to states this evening. With a 12-7 win over #1 seed Fort Pierce Central, the ladies are heading to states for the first time in school history.

Led by star quarterback Keelin Coleman and a stellar defensive performance, the ladies were able to come back and take the win.

Wellington started the game off hot, with Coleman throwing a 20 yard touchdown pass to sophomore WR Samantha Ellis in the corner of the endzone. They went for 1 point but could not score putting the Wolverines in front 6-0 in the first quarter.

The Cobras had an answer to the Wolverines though, marching down the field and scoring, converting their extra point attempt putting them in the lead 7-6. Before the first half ended, Wellington had a chance to score at the 15 yard line but a low pass to WR Angelia Bistrong kept the score 7-6 going into the half.

The third quarter saw a defensive battle, both defenses holding strong against the powerful offenses.

Going into the fourth quarter, Fort Pierce Central still led 7-6 with no lead change. The Wolverines were in desperate need of a spark on offense and that’s exactly what they got. Freshman WR Mia Ciezak was subbed in and on the first play caught a 40 yard go route in diving fashion and stumbled across the goal line to put the Wolverines up 12-7 with 4 minutes left in the 4th.

The Wolverine’s defense was able to hold off the Cobras one last time and Wellington kneeled to end the game. Emotions were high as the clock hit zero as they realized they were going to states.

Wellington will be playing Lennard High School out of Ruskin, FL at 7:00 PM on Friday, May 10th at the Buccaneers Practice Facility. If they win, they will advance to the 2a state championship which will be held the next day at 6:00 PM on Saturday, May 11th at the Buccaneers Practice Facility.

With Somerset’s loss in the state quarterfinals, Wellington will be the sole team representing Palm Beach County at states. We will be covering the Wolverines and their quest to win the state championship on New Era Prep’s social media pages.
