WEST PALM BEACH – This one was quite easy.
Keiser quarterback Shea Spencer led his team by completing 13 of 17 passes for 206 yards and three touchdowns in last night’s (Oct. 1) 48-7 home win over Florida Memorial.
It was a nice turnaround win for Keiser (2-3; 1-0 in Sun Conference).
Spencer threw two touchdown passes to wide receiver Myles Henderson (three receptions, 122 yards, two touchdowns). One of those scoring plays was a 51-yarder with 7.3 seconds left in the first quarter. The other one was a 67-yarder on a free play with 7:20 left in the second quarter.
“We just had great communication,” Spencer said. “It’s just a lot of work…during the week. Getting on the same page, doing things over and over again. It’s a lot of communication between him and I…It just so happened it went his way and he made a play.”
Spencer completed at least one pass to six different players, including what was a 32-yard touchdown pass to Jaylen Arnold with 8:40 left in the third quarter.
“Everyone on the team – except Myles – we’ve been playing together for the last 3-4 years,” Spencer said. “Great chemistry. We work really hard all week. Those are the guys that have been here in the program and they know the standard. They are expected to raise the standard as well. They can trust me and I can trust them. It’s a whole lot easier to get the ball. It’s definitely a special thing to have.”
Keiser finished the game with 508 total yards, with a lot of that coming from running back Marques Burgess, who had 26 carries for 160 yards and a touchdown.
Burgess reached the 4,000-yard mark for career rushing yards last night against Florida Memorial (2-3; 0-1 in Sun Conference).
“Marques is special,” Spencer said. “Every time he touches the ball, you don’t know if he’s going to score or not. He can score every time he touches the ball…It’s a lot better in the offense when you have a guy like that.”
Spencer credited the offensive line for making the game’s result possible.
“They are the heart and soul of this offense,” Spencer said. “When they’re down, the whole offense is down. It starts up front with them…When they get going, they get excited and everybody get excited. It’s huge to get them going.”
With Keiser’s home opening win in the books, it is all about Sun Conference play from here on out in the regular season.
“When we play our best, we’re gonna be really good,” Keiser head coach Doug Socha said in last night’s press conference with media members. “I think we saw glimpses of that tonight.
Keiser, which started the season at 1-3 but played against opponents from the Division II and FCS levels, will have its next game on Saturday, Oct. 8 at No. 19 St. Thomas (4-1).
“I think it’s gonna be a great football game,” Socha said. “When we play those guys, they’re highly motivated, we’re highly motivated. It’s a conference game down there, 12 o’clock kickoff. I expect a really good football game.”
