CORAL GABLES (Fla.) – Travis Homer has officially been recognized as one of the nation’s best college football players.
This is backed up by the fact he has received his second national Watch List award nod in the the past three days. In addition to being selected to the Maxwell Award Watch List, Homer is now a preseason candidate for the Doak Walker Award.
The Oxbridge Academy alum was recognized by the PcW SMU Athletic Forum, which made the formal announcement earlier today.
Homer’s recognition was first reported by Hurricanesports.com, the University of Miami’s athletics website.
“That’s huge,” said Wellington 2019 ATH Mark Antony Richards, who spoke on Homer’s honors. “He had some big games this year, even though he didn’t start in the beginning of it. I can see him rushing for over 1,000 yards this year. He’s proven to be a true running back for Miami.”
Homer played in all 13 games last season, with nine of them in the starting position at running back. The 2017 All-ACC Second Team selection finished the previous season with 1,203 all-purpose yards (966 rushing yards on 163 attempts; 5.9 yards per carry; eight rushing touchdowns; three 100-yard games in 13 games of action) and was the only Miami offensive player who earned the right to wear the now-famous “Turnover Chain” via a fumble recovery on special teams.
The PwC SMU Athletic Forum Board of Directors will name ten semifinalists in November, and three finalists, as voted on by the Doak Walker Award National Selection Committee, will be announced on November 20.
The committee will cast a second vote beginning November 26 to determine the recipient.
The National Selection Committee consists of past recipients, former NFL All-Pro and college All-America running backs, media members and selected special representatives.
The recipient of the 2018 Doak Walker Award will be announced live on The Home Depot College Football Awards on Thursday, December 6 on ESPN.
The award, which will name its 29th recipient in 2018, is named for SMU’s three-time All-America running back Doak Walker. It is the only major collegiate award that requires all candidates to be in good academic standing and on schedule to graduate within one year of other students of the same classification.
