Hurricane recap: Offense has struggles but RB Cam’Ron Harris shines in second scrimmage

CORAL GABLES – In an odd twist, the Miami Hurricanes second scrimmage wasn’t as effective as the team’s first scrimmage.

After a first scrimmage where the Hurricanes offense had no pre-snap penalties and few mistakes in total, the team’s second story was a different story, with a far more sloppy offense at points.

“In the first half, I thought the defense really took it to the offense. You could see the addition of some of the guys coming back on the defensive line and that added an overall edge to their play,” Hurricanes head coach Manny Diaz said following the team’s scrimmage.

“I thought the offense in the second half responded and played better and moved the ball in the second half and had some touchdown drives,” Diaz continued. “Overall, though, it was much, much too sloppy of a scrimmage; much sloppier than the first scrimmage.”

Despite the offense’s overall struggles, junior running back Cam’Ron Harris shined. In the team’s second scrimmage, Harris recorded 77 rushing yards on 13 carries, while also adding two touchdowns on five receptions.

“[Cam’Ron Harris] Really set the tone with the first touchdown in the first half,” Diaz said about Harris. “He caught a ball in the flat about eight yards from the end zone and had three guys that really had to get him on the ground and he ran through all three tackles for a touchdown, so very impressive to see that Cam is making an older guy type play.”

Freshman wide receiver Xavier Restrepo, an alumnus of Deerfield Beach, tallied 79 yards and a touchdown on his five receptions, which tied for a team-high in catches made. After missing the last scrimmage because of an injury, junior tight end Brevin Jordan returned and tallied four passes.

On defense, defensive end Quincey Roche and defensive tackle Jon Ford returned on the defensive line and provided a boost in the trenches.

“Quincy and Jaelen were both very disruptive,” Diaz said. “Getting Jon Ford back, just a lot of guys creating havoc there in the backfield and creating some negative plays, which we had very few negative plays in the first scrimmage and it seemed like there are a lot more tonight (Aug. 22).”
