Hurricanes versus Tar Heels on a Tuesday night— you’d think it wouldn’t be an electrifying pulse flowing throughout Watsco Center right? Absolutely wrong.
Fans drenched in orange and green paint waving flags, cheering performing backflips of all sorts, and most importantly, the University of Miami Basketball Team putting on an incredible display as they stunned #11 University of North Carolina Tuesday February 10th.
Starting off, Miami came out of the gate aggressive as they dominated the glass with their first couple of buckets.
Sticking to that game plan as it seemed to be working, they looked to Miami Center Ernest Udeh Jr. to attack inside the paint early. He finished the game with a 15 point, 10 rebound, 4 assist double-double.
As the Tar Heels made sure to keep the game close, they tried to keep pace with inside buckets from Jarin Stevenson and Caleb Wilson.
Miami controlled tempo and defensive pressure forced UNC into tough shots. Resulting in Miami leading 43-40 at the half.
As the second half went underway, the Hurricanes went right back to where they left off, strong pushes to expand the lead.
UNC wouldn’t go down that easy as Guard Caleb Wilson tried to keep them in the game with his 12 points and 6 rebounds.
Yet it wasn’t enough as Miami Guard Tre Donaldson who had an impressive 14 point, 6 rebound and 4 assist outing, kept his composure handling the ball late in the game.
Donaldson scored a layup to make it 69-62 with about a minute left.
UNC made one last push but couldn’t get stops or hit shots consistently. In return, the Hurricanes sealed it at the line — scoring 6 clutch free throws in the final minute.
Hurricanes end the game in an impressive 75-66 win at home.
Yet the action doesn’t just end there—as fans stormed the court after the upset — it’s the Hurricanes first Top-25 win in 2 years.
What does this do for Miami? Well, it’s a huge resume booster, showing that they’re legit ACC contenders.
The Tar Heels drop to 19-5 while the Hurricanes move to 19-5 after the victory, their next game is February 14th against the NC State Wolfpack.
