VERO BEACH – Inlet Grove defeated St. Edwards 24-0 in a spring game that featured masterful play-calling by new athletic director and head football coach Charles McCrae.

“I expected us to go out and play decent, but not extremely well because it’s a lot of players’ first time playing,” McCrae said. “For them it was going to be hectic.”

The Canes took a 6-0 lead at the 5:00 mark as Jahiem Franklin caught a well-thrown touchdown pass from quarterback Desean Dixon.

The Canes ended the first quarter with an interception made by Greg Ponder and a complete pass made by Dixon.

With multiple holding calls called on the Canes, they couldn’t get much else going in the first half. But they were able to go into halftime with the 6-0 lead intact.

Barely into the third quarter, a 10-yard gain was made by Franklin. Not long after that, a 8-yard gain by Keron Ward led to another Inlet Grove touchdown.

Ward’s score gave the Hurricanes a 12-0 lead at that point.

The third quarter ended with sacks made by Theodore Hill, who would go to score Inlet Grove’s third touchdown early in the fourth. With Hill’s touchdown, the Hurricanes extended their lead to 18-0.

With multiple pass completions made by Dixon, the next Inlet Grove drive ended with yet another touchdown. The road team had a 24-0 lead with about 8:00 left in the game.

“I feel excited,” McCrae said. “We went out and got exactly what we wanted.”

The game was called due to an altercation that took place shortly thereafter.

“I felt that we could’ve done better, but I think we did good for the little chemistry we do have,” said left tackle D’ontaye Strawter. “It’s just the first of many wins if we keep on working together.”
