Cincinnati, OH.- Well that wasn’t fun.

Last night (July 17), Inter-Miami was shut out 0-3 by FC Cincinnati, snapping Lionel Messi’s MLS-record streak of scoring multiple goals in five straight matches. Cincinnati’s Gerardo Valenzuela opened the score card in the first half, followed by two second-half goals from Evander to remain a point behind the Philadelphia Union in the Eastern Conference standings. Miami fell to 11-4-5 with 38 points, fifth in the Eastern Conference.

“Very pleased with the performance,” Cincinnati head coach Pat Noonan said. “Our guys were up for it.”

Cincinnati stifling defense kept Miami to only two shots on goal in the contest. On the defensive side the opponents were having their way with Miami with 6 shots on goal within the first 15 minutes. In the 25th minute starting Inter-Miami’s Goalie, Oscar Ustari, was subbed off the pitch due to a hamstring injury and was replaced by Rocco Rios Novo. Ustari’s status moving forward is day to day.

Despite being down 0-3 by the 70th minute. Lionel Messi was not subbed out and concern is growing about his usage. He went down in a late game collision that scared fans as he laid on the ground in pain. Messi would get up to play and finish the match.

Javier Mascherano: “Clearly, we have played a lot of games. Clearly, we don’t have a big squad. The intensity of the games that we have played, especially over a month and a half, has been at a very high level. We have to find an explanation for it and improve to avoid them because the team keeps being harmed by these injuries.”

Inter Miami look to bounce back Saturday night as they travel to take on the New York Red Bulls.
