Miami Gardens, FL.- NFL Twitter has been absolutely blowing up this morning.

The Miami Dolphins have finally dealt 3 time All-Pro Cornerback Jalen Ramsey. Who’s the trade partner? The Pittsburgh Steelers.

It’s been a hectic morning in the office. So many details are flying in sporadically. Whenever it seemed like there was finally enough information to write this article out, BOOM, new news, let me catch you up to speed.

First reports by Adam Schefter at 10:36 AM stated that Ramsey had been dealt to the Steelers, with no trade details at the time. At 10:52- ESPN reports a ‘Player for Player’ deal involving Ramsey and 3 time All-Pro Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick. Finally, at 10:59, Schefty strikes again, announcing Miami would also be shipping TE Jonnu Smith to Pittsburgh alongside a late-round pick swap.

There are three things that stand out to me about this blockbuster deal.

First and foremost, welcome back home, Minkah Fitzpatrick. For those unfamiliar, the Miami Dolphins had previously selected Minkah Fitzpatrick 11th overall in the 2018 NFL Draft. After a very strong rookie campaign, Fitzpatrick became extremely dissatisfied with Miami’s former coaching regime and demanded a trade in the middle of the 2019 season. Miami picks up an extremely talented safety in Fitzpatrick, adding much-needed star power to a secondary with a LOT of question marks headed into the season.

To further strengthen his desire to return to the 305, Minkah Fitzpatrick’s younger brother, Justice, is headed into his senior season at St. Thomas Aquinas in Ft Lauderdale.

Secondly, Jonnu Smith gets to reunite with his former coach, Arthur Smith (Steelers OC). The Smith Duo has paired up three times now, in Tennessee, Atlanta, and now in Pittsburgh. Since Jonnu was placed on the trade block, the Steelers were the immediate favorite to land the Pro-Bowl TE. Also, Jonnu has already agreed to a 1 year, $12M extension, bringing his deal in Pitt. to 2 Years, $18M.

Finally, when it comes to Ramsey, Miami gets out of that god awful contract extension. In 2024, the Dolphins signed the former Super Bowl champ to a 3 year, $72M deal with $24.2M guaranteed. Pittsburgh has already agreed to give Ramsey a $1.5M raise, bringing his 2025 season salary to $26.6M. With a corner in the twilight of his career, every Miami fan should be extremely enthusiastic that the Dolphins are no longer tied to that grossly overpaid contract.

The losses of Ramsey and Smith free up $14M for Miami’s cap space, bringing the Dolphins’ total to $27.7M. That number will undoubtedly change in the very near future, as Fitzpatrick will be seeking a new contract.
