LSU’s offense grabbed headlines in the Tigers’ 51-10 win over Clemson, but the defense set the tone early — and Jordan Ross delivered one of the game’s biggest plays.

The junior defensive end intercepted Clemson quarterback Christopher Vizzina in the first quarter and returned the pass 30 yards for a touchdown, turning a 10-3 LSU lead into a 17-3 advantage.

The play came on third down with Clemson attempting to keep pace with LSU. Instead, Ross’ interception completely shifted the momentum toward the home team and helped spark a dominant defensive performance.

Ross finished the game with four tackles, two tackles for loss, a sack and a quarterback hurry in addition to his interception return for a touchdown. His performance earned him SEC Defensive Lineman of the Week honors following the opening weekend.

Ross’ impact was part of a larger defensive effort that held Clemson to only 145 total yards, including 40 rushing yards and 105 passing yards. Clemson also converted just one of 13 third-down attempts.

The pick-six was especially significant because it came while the game was still competitive. LSU had a 10-3 lead, but Ross’ touchdown pushed the advantage to two scores and helped the Tigers seize control.

By halftime, LSU led 31-3.

For Ross, the performance provided an early glimpse of the impact he can have on LSU’s defense. His ability to contribute as both a pass rusher and play maker in coverage gives defensive coordinator Blake Baker another versatile weapon.

If Saturday was any indication, Ross could be one of the most disruptive players on an LSU defense that immediately established itself as a major strength of the team.
