In an amazing Friday night showdown that featured multiple lead changes, the Chaminade-Madonna Lions came back from a 10-point deficit to defeat the American Heritage Patriots 28-24 in a battle that lived up to the hype between two Florida powerhouses.
The Patriots looked in control early, jumping out to a 7-0 lead in the first quarter on a passing touchdown with about two minutes remaining. After Chaminade-Madonna responded with a rushing touchdown in the second quarter but missed the extra point, American Heritage extended their advantage to 14-6 before halftime with another passing touchdown and successful PAT.
The third quarter saw American Heritage push their lead to 24-14, seeming to take command of the game. But the Lions refused to quit.
Chaminade-Madonna’s determination was on full display in the fourth quarter, where they dominated with 14 points. A rushing touchdown early in the quarter cut the deficit to 24-21, setting the stage for what would become a dramatic finish. Then the game’s turning point came, putting Chaminade-Madonna up 28-24.
In the final minute, American Heritage drove to the Lions’ 18-yard line with one last chance to win. But Chaminade-Madonna’s defense stood strong, making a game-saving stop.
In a post-game interview, FSU commit Jasen Lopez, who made the amazing last catch that helped clinch the victory, redirected praise to his teammates when I asked about his mindset during the final play:
“Our defense, it all starts up there. Our O-line did a great job holding up. Our quarterback and coaches did a great job and trusted me with the ball. So I mean, I went out there and made a play.” – Jasen Lopez
The win improves Chaminade-Madonna’s record and will likely put the Lions back on the map. For American Heritage, the heartbreaking loss will test their resolve as they look to bounce back in their next contest.
