WEST PALM BEACH – The St. Thomas Bobcats are now in the process of building up their special teams unit.
After a spirited visit to the NAIA school last month, Forest Hill senior long snapper Dominic Barr has decided to spend his next few years with them. To the Falcons special teams standout, it was an easy decision.
The Kornblue Kicking four-star and nationally ranked long snapper (No. 17 in the country) made it official on Monday afternoon (Feb. 3).
“I think what lead me to St. Thomas is the moment when I visited there,” the 5-foot-7, 125-pound long snapper said. “It really felt like home to me. The coaches, the other players, and the atmosphere there is just amazing.”
Barr chose St. Thomas over Keiser, which was his other offer.
“For being ranked in the nation and a four-star long snapper, my size for that position lacks that,” Barr said. “And with the coaching staff at St. Thomas University, they believe in me. That’s another reason why I chose STU.”
At Forest Hill, Barr was directly involved in at least one situation that changed a game in his team’s favor. During Forest Hill’s game against Jupiter in Week 10 of the regular season, the senior was able to recover a special teams fumble that gave his team a lead.
Though Forest Hill (5-3 before the game; 5-4 after it) went on to drop a 28-14 decision to Jupiter (4-4 before the game; 5-4 after it), it left Barr feeling like he made a big contribution. To be completely honest here, long snappers rarely get those opportunities in games.
“That was definitely my best moment,” said Barr, who ended his senior season with six tackles, the aforementioned fumble recovery, and no bad snaps.
In about one hour (9:30 a.m. ceremony), Barr will be signing his letter of intent to St. Thomas at Forest Hill Community High School. It will be a special moment to reflect on his time with the Falcons, who have helped him achieve this milestone in his early life.
“My experience at Forest Hill is one to remember,” Barr said. “When I walked into Forest Hill the summer of entering my ninth grade year, I was undersized and just out of shape. But not only did Forest Hill help me become a better athlete, they helped me become a better person and how to become a better man in the real world. Forest Hill pushed me to be the best, and I kept working harder and harder to get that varsity spot and going through a practice at Forest Hill comes with a saying, ‘You learn something new everyday.’ That is true when it comes to Forest Hill Football.”
