Kentucky cornerback Maxwell Hairston entered the NFL Scouting Combine as a highly regarded but somewhat overlooked prospect, projected as a top-50 selection. After a show-stopping performance in Indianapolis, he has firmly cemented himself as a first-round talent, drawing significant buzz from NFL teams.
Hairston took the podium with confidence, promising to put on a show, and he delivered in spectacular fashion. The Michigan native posted an eye-popping 4.28-second 40-yard dash, the fastest time among all combine participants at that point. He also recorded a 39.5-inch vertical jump (second among defensive backs) and a 10-foot-9-inch broad jump (third). Next Gen Stats tracked him reaching a blazing 24.25 miles per hour, the fifth-fastest speed by any player at the combine over the past three years and second-fastest among cornerbacks. These numbers, combined with his already impressive tape, have skyrocketed his draft stock.
Hairston’s raw athleticism has been quantified with an outstanding Relative Athletic Score (RAS) of 9.68, ranking 81st out of 2,480 cornerbacks since 1987. But he is far more than just a workout warrior. Over the past two seasons at Kentucky, he recorded six interceptions, including three returned for touchdowns, along with three forced fumbles. Most notably, he didn’t allow a single touchdown in coverage last season, showcasing his reliability as a shutdown defender. His ability to excel in both man and zone schemes, combined with his elite closing burst and fluid transitions, makes him a versatile asset for NFL defenses.

One of Hairston’s most underrated strengths is his spatial awareness in zone coverage. He processes information quickly, recognizes route combinations with ease, and adjusts his positioning accordingly. His closing burst on the football is exceptional, punishing quarterbacks who telegraph their throws. Despite his lean frame, he brings a competitive edge to contested situations, fighting for every ball and displaying excellent tracking skills to secure takeaways rather than merely breaking up passes. His performance in the box drill further confirmed his outstanding burst and polished fundamentals, reinforcing the notion that he is not just a raw athlete but a complete defensive back.
Initially expected to be a top-50 selection, Hairston’s combine performance has made teams wake up to the star he has always been. Now, he is certain to hear his name called on the first night of the draft. In an extremely strong cornerback class with names like Travis Hunter, Will Johnson, Benjamin Morrison, Jahdae Barron, and Shavon Revel it goes to show just how electrifying of a prospect Hairston is to be the talk of the town. Maxwell just may be the most enticing pure cornerback in the draft with his sheer upside. Ideal landing spots for Hairston include the Pittsburgh Steelers, Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills. These are teams in need of a dynamic, rangy cornerback who can elevate their secondary with his combination of speed, instincts, and playmaking ability.
Hairston’s meteoric rise from a borderline first-rounder to one of the most exciting defensive prospects in the draft is a testament to his elite athleticism and refined skill set. NFL teams looking for a true difference-maker at cornerback will have a hard time passing on him when they are on the clock.
