MIAMI GARDENS, Fla. — Miami and Florida State have gone back and forth through the first two quarters, with both teams exchanging touchdowns and momentum before heading into halftime tied at 14 Saturday night at Hard Rock Stadium.
Miami struck first midway through the opening quarter when running back Mark Fletcher Jr. capped an 11-play, 86-yard drive with a seven-yard touchdown run at the 7:32 mark. The Hurricanes established an early 7-0 advantage and carried that lead into the second quarter.
Florida State responded early in the second quarter as quarterback Ashton Daniels connected with Desirrio Riles for a 23-yard touchdown with 13:52 remaining. The Seminoles marched 53 yards on seven plays to even the score at 7.
Miami wasted little time answering as quarterback Darian Mensah found wide receiver Malachi Toney for a 14-yard touchdown pass with 8:19 left in the second quarter. The six-play, 80-yard drive put the Hurricanes back in front 14-7.
Florida State continued to battle, but the Seminoles suffered a significant setback late in the second quarter when running back Ousmane Kromah went down with an apparent lower-leg injury. Kromah was carted off the field after having his left ankle placed in an air cast. His status for the second half remained uncertain at the break.
With just 1:40 remaining before halftime, Daniels took matters into his own hands, punching in a two-yard touchdown run to tie the game at 14. The Seminoles needed just three plays to cover 15 yards, bringing the game even heading into the break.
